superraven ???
Would like to hear from people who still base jump a super raven. What is your wing loading? What mods have been made? What base container? What is your overall opinion on the performance of it as a slider up conopy? As this is what it would be used for,( in a base rig ) Bridge day, maybe twin falls. It would be packed in a skydiving rig and skydived 95% of the time. Thanks for everyones time and advice.

Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
To use it for base; you'll need to do a lot of things. Tail pocket, tailgate, reinforce the bridle attachment point(or have a multi installed), and two brake settings would be a good idea, In other words, find a rigger to help you... if he's willing to. I like a slightly high loading (.78-.80), seems to start flying a lot quicker, but that also means that it flies a lot quicker! I'm 6' and about 160 lbs. I've tried a 249, but I like my 220 better.

Re: [kellyface272] superraven ???
thanks,I believe the SR posted sq. footages are not measured the same as other canopys, a 249 might be closer to a 235? I will check into this more. Is the deep brake setting used on slider up jumps? Any mods made will be by one of the base gear manufactuers?riggers.

Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
i jump raven4. on all kinds of jumps. 300ft freefall to wingsuit.
nothing to be scared of, it works fine.
if its made after 90 you just need a tailpocket and proper brake settings, reinforcement of the attachement point seems fine, even more for slider up.
i pack it into a helium (bonus points for the kit being mistaken as a razor/trango!)
for the occasional slider down just use painters tape.
or fingetrap that tailgate attachment into a line, it's not so difficult.
proper brake settings are pretty much a must though.
oh and it jellyfishes a little more than my osp, i have to admit.
other than that fair low budget choice.
i started jumping it when i was already well experienced in base at around 400 jumps and a lot of skydives. i don't know how beginners would get along with it but for me it works fine.
i get the occasinal "what is this shit" look but oh well.
makes me feel a little bit special, another bonus.

Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
the 4 is aorund 265 sqft i think so it puts me at around 0.75.

Re: [mr_prick] superraven ???
Been jumping Mavrick, pegasus, fury, etc get real and invest in a bas canopy.

No shit wonder why people want to hassle around with old skydiving canopies anymore. From the 90íes get real mr Prick.

Re: [434] superraven ???
because you can buy it for 150, fix it up for free and still don't die?
i also have state of the art modern canopies, and if i was a rich man i would only have base specific canopies.
but since i ain't i refuse to use up my good canopies for antennas, windmills bridges, terminal or high bust factor jumps.
the proper tool for the job.
if i had the choice i would always prefer a real base canopy.
clear enough?
get experienced, decide for yourself. beginners stay away.

Re: [mr_prick] superraven ???
I agree. Sometimes the cheap canopy is the right tool. If the landing zone is small and surrounded in trees, I'm using my raven.

I have to keep my fox for when I need to look cool!Laugh

Re: [kellyface272] superraven ???
Well, anybody know how different is a super raven from a mojo, besides the tail pocket, and stronger bridle attachment, extra brake settings? I am talking how it flys and lands?
Shortcut
Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
I've never got to try a mojo. My raven takes pretty good timing for a stand up landing (especially at night), but again, I like a slightly higher wing loading.

I have noticed that it doesn't do as well in turb. or wind shear as a base specific canopy does. I had a 25mph tail wind at the exit point off an A, but the surface winds were 0-4mph. It shuddered a little more than I would have liked when I went through the shear level.

I think the shuddering has something to do with the older fabric. The material on newer base canopies seems a lot stiffer.

Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
Lines are a little on the long side. It's a thinner airfoil. You may find that it doesn't sink quite as well in supper deep breaks, may stall a bit easier, and might lose a bit more altitude recovering from the stall (in the surge) then other canopies. but I think you'll find that it's a very nice flying canopy and will out perform those with thicker cross sections. I'd short line it and tweek the trim a bit. It will improve it's turn responce and make you a bit more stable under the canopy.

And if you can live with pussy pink I've got a whole closit full of them. 0-3 jumps maybe a dozen repacks. Just need lines.

Re: [elkhound] superraven ???
I used one for a few years in my smaller, known good landing area rig. It was not new but performed like it was way old. Real sinker with not much glide capability. OK at the potato and sandy desert landing areas only. If you're skydiving with it you'll be familiar with it's limitations but will be wearing it out that much quicker. Sounds like Lee has one that'll do. Go fer it!

Re: [434] superraven ???
I am with Mr Prick.

Jumped a Raven IV in Norway the entire summer of 08. Aside from having the coolest name of any base canopy, The raven is Lightweight, packs slim because it is not over reinforced, works exceptionally well, never slams you open, no need to even roll the nose. Also used it on 190ft freefalls above land.

I trust the Raven. On the older ones, reinforce the attachment point if you are jumping slider down, or just keep an eye on the canopy and it's trueness. jumping primarily slider up, no need for that, or even a deeper brake setting.

A great choice for your money.

Think of it this way. the Raven is one of the most trusted reserves. It is arguably the most tried and true 7 cell canopy available for purchase.

Re: [jtholmes] superraven ???
I have no problem with that. You ar experienced jumper looking for your best option that suits you best, and you know what you are doing, and what to do with the canopy. As an overall standing recomandation for new jumpers, I do not agree.

Still an old canopy thow.

Re: [434] superraven ???
Ya, thanks, I have a sr 4, was packed as a reserve, I was thinking of getting Morpheus to do some mods. And putting it in a j5 and skydiving it. I would pick up a velcro rig, maybe buy a new one. But, either way I want to hit bridge day again, and head out to the perrine. Other than that, the canopy would get about 30-40 skydives a year, thats it. In the future I might go to go to Norway, and if the chance comes along to get an "A", and someday a wall? moab? I would be happy. But I have no desire to go balls to the wall doing base. I am used to the retards at the DZ asking why jump a huge parachute like that?, but I could care less, I have over 600 skydives with a sharpchuter, and love it. It is great when you visit a new dz get a shit spot and have to land downtown in a parking lot. Most peoples expierence with f111 is some tired piece of shit thier mentor??? had , with 1000 jumps on it, Oh, it is perfect for you. I never jumped f111 past 400 jumps. cya

Re: [kellyface272] superraven ???
Can you be more specific? I have skydived it, but I have not added the proper mods to basejump it.
