Deliberately setting a forest fire
We all know the rangers in Yosemite will camp out in the meadow on their days off just to try and catch BASE jumpers. In fact, in any National park where BASE jumping is possible rangers will routinely ignore a serious crime or a call for help in hopes of catching jumpers .

So my Question is; Would you deliberately set a forest fire to distract the park rangers so you could safely make a jump in a national park?
Shortcut
Re: [The Pick] Deliberately setting a forest fire
Your idea/plan is fundamentally flawed: either you start the fire close to the site you wish to jump and thereby increase the number of rangers/firefighters in the area or you set the fire far enough away from the site and there is little to no effect on the rangers except they are looking for possible suspects.

either way if you got caught starting the fire losing your rig would be the least of your problems

Well you are wrong on both accounts anonymous internet person with anger management issues. I am a jumper, and know full well about the history of jumping in national parks(and am myself a very, very small piece of the new chapter of that history thank you very much). Is BASE not selfish enough without even the slightest thought of burning down god knows how much of a national treasure of a forest for a single meaningless jump?

Granted I did assume the OP was thinking about he himself doing this, when he might just have overheard other people talking about it and was posting it up as that, and if the latter is the case then I apologize for my assumption, but seriously, get a grip man.

Re: [Couloirman] Deliberately setting a forest fire
hiya,

the OP has a colorful history back before I even knew what "ram air" "square parachute" or "BASE jumping" was.

It includes a set of mini risers that did not function too well on opening, a certain NP with some sweet walls and some nasty treatment by the fags in hats while being quite fucked up from the said mini riser(s).

When did I ever call gaper names before this? I clearly apologized for name calling and admitted to overreacting if this in fact was not a suggestion of something to do to get away with a jump and was only repeating what was overheard other jumpers suggesting. It's just that from posts on here and blinc people seem to think that starting a fire is only a slap in the nps's face and not one in all of our faces.

I'm sorry to have offended anyone, and enemies are not what I'm trying to make but I will not stay quiet in the face of anyone suggesting starting a fire in a national forest just to make a jump. If my sarcasm meter just wasn't working when i first read this then I'm extra sorry.

Nobody hates the NPS Rangers as much as I, however to even discuss the option of Arson is simply insane. Frankly, I am shocked that ANYONE voted "YES" on this poll.

The legal and moral ramifications of Arson are beyond comprehension. Just for the pleasure of making a Base Jump, you would risk the death of Human Beings, possibly killing families, destroying property, leaving people homeless, and just as bad... destroying the green Earth Forest that would take many decades to recover!

Knowing you Jess, I am confident that you would never consider this violent act as a viable option, even after yourself being victimized by the NPS. However, with this post, you have seeded the idea into the conscience mind of some warped individual Base Jumper, that would consider or possibly act upon this suggestion!

Kinda like the reasoning of the NPS in keeping it illegal. We might influence other non-skilled people to try it too and then they will have to clean up all the dead bodies from the BASE of El Cap. Hey, maybe all the human feces and other garbage that gets thrown off the wall from climbers might finally get cleaned up along with the BASE Jumpers bodies. hmmmm.

lighten up people, Pick is joking i'm sure just to get a reaction.

Reminds me of the opening scene from "Pineapple Express" ---ILLEGAL!!!! Kill Him!--Tongue

Any Base Jumper who supports Censorship should go back to the Dropzone where you can be with other like-minded "NO YOU CANNOT" people.

Edited to add: I DO NOT CONDONE SETTING A FOREST FIRE OF ANY SORT IN ANY NATIONAL PARK, NTL FOREST, WILDERNESS AREA, BLM LAND, ETC. I just believe that we should be free to express our frustration at the current mistreatment by the forest fuzz. Oh and now we are ALL on the terrorist watch list for sure. Prepare for the rubber glove treatment people!

Shortcut
Re: [The Pick] Deliberately setting a forest fire
Definitely has to be better ways to distract the rangers. Screw what effect is has on the humans, you're going to end up killing animals who I'm sure have no grievances with your jumping.

Alternatives:

1. Hiring a few hobos to cause chaos in another nearby location. (it's okay to exploit hobos). And you'll most likely only need to offer them booze.

2. As someone said before, smoke bombs... Or if you could, get a smoke grenade. Harder to get hold of, but quite effective.

3. Get a friend to call in a fake emergency from a concieled public telephone, that requires lots of rangers to assist.

All considerably less damaging than starting a fire, and let's not forget that if they do find out a BASE jumper set the fire, there will likely be much tougher measures set out in tracking down jumpers as the notion of arson would be added to the list of reasons why to put more effort into catching jumpers.

Re: [The Pick] Deliberately setting a forest fire
I think people should remember not all rangers are created equal. they specialize and have limited tasks.

I seriously doubt the interpretive guides would head off to fight fires.

unless they cleared the valley of tourists, I doubt the LEO rangers would leave as well. their role is one of command and control of humans, not fire.

Re: [wwarped] Deliberately setting a forest fire
Perfect fire is a good thing. It would give all the fire fighter something to do. I am sure they are bored, and need work in this recession.
Shortcut
Re: [wwarped] Deliberately setting a forest fire
Precisely and seriously true & Spot-On Correct. It is about public Control.
The best 'diversion' to make, before a BASE jump in Yosemite & to draw the NPS -or- (Nazi park police) to there FULL potential of there training. Is Not to call in a 'Forest Fire'. It must be a situation that is too easy for them to turn away from & one that is 'Routinely Trained for' & one that also feeds there greed of Revenue routinely gathered from a situation . A diversion and situation that takes little physical effort on there part to achieve a sense of positive self-worth while stealing/exploiting revenue from the pockets of the paying public who visit.
This BASE Jump diversion is 'Green Friendly' Non destructive and involves no combustion of the public land which we all own and paid for but want to Jump from .
NOW, You have to 'think' like the NPS Ranger does. . Now close your eyes & Visualize yourself as an underachiever with lesser intelligence who Purposely seeks employment from the US Fed. Parks Service and one who gets gratification from sucking the Public Tit & patrols 'your land' like his personal little Cat-Box.
So (The Best) Yosemite BASE jumping Diversion is. 10-minutes before exit. Call-in & Report a 'Visual siting' & 'Location' of a paying park visitor who is drinking an Alcohol beverage while parked in a motor vehicle. They ALL will be on that 'Route' & DUI easy Revenue money maker, Like Flies on Shit they will swarm to that location & away from yours.

Hey Spiderbaby,
Yer minds in the gutter as usual! On a more serious note think about what prompts Pick's attitude....the NPS's policies killed Frank and Jan, the national parks in the USA do not belong to the people as they were intended. The DEA, IRS ,FAA,& NPS that's right they're all here to help...the biggest expense to the taxpayer and the highest number of incidents in the NP's are to park employees...the most expensive S&R in an NP was a few years ago for a ranger inRMNP.
I know you're a Patriot but what happened to the "Land Of The Free" EUROPE...it's an embarassment!!!!!

Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] with all due respect
unless someone is doing the equivalent of holding a gun to my head, I should be responsible for anything that happens to me on a jump.

all the NPS does is add an additional risk that must be managed (if you insist on jumping). few people would blame ice or wind for a negative outcome, so I won't blame any security at a site. I see little difference between NPS or Burj security.

it's one of the thing that makes BASE wonderful. each person makes their own decisions and lives with the consequences.

But I'm pretty sure your dad wouldn't have aggressively pursued you into a swollen river for doing something that should not be classified as criminal. I'm sorry but anybody that thinks that the rangers have been justified in their actions there is either delusional or just a mindless piece of shit.

And another poster mentioned that some old school base jumpers had done things to screw it up for Yosemite. That is a very weak argument and here's why: do we shut down every campsite, hiking trail, and outdoor recreational area because of the few ass wipes that leave their trash and beer cans laying around? No.

The NPS was looking for any reason they could to shut down jumping and that was a great one to latch onto. I'm not justifying the offense but the response by the NPS was heavy-handed at best but more accurately described as criminal.

The NPS started with a worthy purpose but has since been degraded and bastardized by a corrupt and pathetic bureaucracy-- too much power and too little accountability. These beautiful places were protected for use by the public. They now act more like they are doing us a favor by allowing us to even access it. I had figured that out well before I ever started jumping. Most of the rangers I encountered had absolutely no respect for visitors and acted more like small-town power-tripping cops.

If you don't believe me, then go to Bridge Day and watch the rangers in the bottom threaten jumpers and spectators alike. It is one of the most pathetic and unnecessary displays of power and control I have ever seen but it is a great example how the NPS operates.
