It's ok to complain, I guess, but just try to keep in mind that folks like Todd, and later on Marty, Marta & Jimmy, and the rest took a big chance and hocked their futures in order to provide you, and everyone else, with dependable BASE gear. And they did it with no promise of any return and a big chance of losing it all or being sued into oblivion.

None of those people would come on here and say that to you, but I will, I saw them do it.

Seriously though, all the big BASE manufacturers are run by BASE jumpers who want to further the sport. I think it's great if Apex can make a large profit margin on little aesthetic extras like black lines, black hardware, hip rings, logos, etc, because the more profit they make the more they will be able to research improvements in BASE gear.

Now not only do I have to have a Trango/Ultralite/Feather for slider up jumps, and an OSP/Fox XS for slider down, I am also forced to have a canopy with black lines for night jumps, and white lines for winter jumps.

Not to mention the dilemma of doing night jumps in the winter - what color lines should I have on the canopy ???? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, the headache !

We use green for the winter, with white spots on it. Goes with the trees for the season.

Have you priced out stainless steel options on skydiving and base gear? Have you also priced out the actual cost of the hardware?

Articulated harness on a skydiving rig. Price it out. Does it really take so much more labor to justify the cost or is it supply and demand?

I would much rather build articulated harnesses than standard ones. I always thought the standard harnesses were more of a pain to lay out.

I ordered BR gear back in 2003, before it merged to become Apex. IIRC, they charged a premium for black lines back then as well.

typically in manufacturing, premium prices are assigned to features like this. standard, stocked items generally get made in bulk. a single set-up yields multiple parts. the black lines may very well be a special set-up, and thus more expensive to make.

then, a premium can be warranted for the additional tracking headaches and possibly to discourage too many people from ordering them.

finally, features like that MUST be expensive. if makes those that order them feel special. they must be cooler, more hip, have better bragging rights, etc. because they were willing to pay the extra when the commoner people will not. the black lines prove their dedication and commitment.

put another way, Starbucks (for example) will lose the snob appeal if they are too cheap, but still try to remain affordable for those who believe they can taste a difference.

white lines are for your nose, black lines are for base canopies - I ordered apex gear about 18 months ago, paid for the options i wanted.

Then there's no reason to want them. Problem solved.

One thing I seriously don't get is black linesets. I think Hippo and DTM said it best on Base Stories, about to jump in central London "your fucking red camera light is going to give us away" - "I think its the two canopies about to bang open thats going to give us way!"...

It is a bit ridiculous,and it is only an extra .15cents per yd I think.That does not add up to $80.The guy who said they didn't charge that long ago,is correct.Not sure what happenned myself.

Consumer Sovereignty - is an economic concept that says
we vote with our dollars. So if you think Chick-Fil-A is
better than McD then it is worth the extra 1 dollar to eat
better food and served by someone who is not rude.

If a jumper is on a budget then like Zach said, buy used.

However, I personally think if you can afford to buy new
gear then fuck it, get it in the colors you want and get all
of the options you like, because if you take care of your
gear it will last a long, long time.

For example: let's say my Mirage G4 with articulated and
stainless steel lasts 20 years -- so for an extra $1 a month
I get to jump the exact rig I want.

Even drunk or stoned, a BASE jumper should still be able
to make his or her own tailgates instead of buying them

Basic Research charged extra for black lines. Vertigo had them as standard on the Dagger. Once they merged into Apex, for the first few years the black was standard, and now it's a chargeable option again.

Greedy bastards at Apex ! They should go out of business. As should all others who charge for black lines (meaning every BASE canopy manufacturer). This way we can all be jumping Raven IIIs and IVs (with white lines) and life will be much simpler !

Unbelievably stupid that this thread has gone this long....if you don't want to pay for black lines, don't get black lines.

Yes, buying something or not buying based on price is like voting except there are only 2 choices on the ballot: "Yes, I want Candidate A be our President" and "No, I don't want Candidate A be our President" - choosing either option does not convey enough information to do anything meaningful. It's "too binary", so to speak.

In this particular case, from manufacturer's perspective, there's no way to figure out that 100 customers who did not order black lines, did so because they didn't want them in the first place or because the price was too high. And that 50 customers who did order black lines are so ecstatic about black lines that they would happily pay even 2x of the current price. Binary test can only output binary answer, there's no "why?" or "what do you want?" information in it.

But if you called manufacturer(s) and asked them, "I would prefer black lines but I see you're charging $80 for them... I can give you $40 if you want... otherwise, I'll go with white lines." - then, if many customers who want this option will do similar negotiations, it may make sense for seller to sell more black lines at a lower price and at least get something instead of nothing. Eventually, market price will settle to some stable and more reasonable value.

A good friend of mine once told me the following about BASE gear color choices, that I will in turn, pass on to you:
"If the color of your [lines] is going to play that big of a role in you getting seen/caught jumping off of an object, then you weren't doing it right to start with."

My suggestion to you is to exercise your right as a consumer and choose to either get non-black lines, or pay the asking price to the company that sells them. And as an aside, although I haven't personally tried your tactic, I'm guessing that the whining/verbal abuse technique is not the best way to get the manufacturer to listen to you.

I'd also suggest that you show some fucking respect for the people who have more BASE knowledge and experience in their big toes than you will likely ever have, and remember who will be building your rig. NOT TO MENTION that all the folks at Apex and for that matter Asylum and Morpheus are TOP SHELF motherfuckers that are some of the nicest people around.

Don't get me wrong, I like keyboards and protractors and yes the two
options are "purchase" or "do not buy".

However, business owners and economists know that the phrase:
Money Talks & Bullshit Walks to be very true because opinions

purchase then we know how they really feel.

Let me give you an example: ask people if education, firefighters,
and law enforcement are important and almost everyone says YES.
But last year when The State of Florida held a vote about property
taxes 66 out of 67 counties voted for lower property taxes

About 80% of property taxes pay for education while the other 20%
pays for all of the emergency personnel we hope we never need but
depend on if our house is on fire, have a car crash, or land funky and
have a bone sticking out.

FYI - Florida is about 45-ish out the 50 states in education.

The wife and I live in the one county that voted for higher property
taxes, we do NOT have kids, and are NOT going to. So when I say
education is important, you can believe that I really feel that way
because I offered to put my money where my mouth is.

Lastly, the reason I am willing to pay more for education although
it will not directly benefit me is NOT because I am generous but I
would prefer to live in a state with less ignorant people because it
usually corresponds to lower crime, more workers, bigger tax base,
and better customer service.

I'd rather subsidize someone's education than welfare check!
