AR15 .22LR conversion
Hey all you BASE/gun nuts.
Anyone here have any experience with using a .22LR conversion for an AR15/M16 rifle?
I've seen some threads and video on the CMMG conversion but wanted some other input.
Anyone have an opinion on them or another brand?
Stainless vs standard?
Cheers

Re: [psychokiwi_base] AR15 .22LR conversion
I had a friend who had a CMMG kit for his AR, and he loved it. One thing though, is that when using this kit, it creates a lot more fouling of the bolt carrier and gas system than standard .223 rounds. .22s use a different type of powder, and they don't have as clean of a burn. If you don't keep it clean, you can expect jamming. Keep a small screwdriver handy!
Accuracy is pretty good out to 100m, but expect some serious drop after that.
If you don't mind additional cleaning, go for it!
Also, the CMMG kit has a 26 round clip versus others who only offer 10 round ones.

I haven't used that specific conversion kit. My experience with .22 conversion kits as follows: You need to use "expensive" .22 ammo. Cheap, low pressure plinking ammo won't carry the bolt back very well. I like CCI Blazers. To answer the SS or Blued question-are you taking it hunting or throwing it in the bed of your pickup? If you are just going to use it at the range to work on drills/skills-SS isn't really necessary, unless you just really like shiney expensive toys ;)

Conversion kits are money well spent. Can't go wrong with them.

trust me its not worth it, cost to much money for something that is mediocre at best

I know some other jumpers that have them..if they speak up...youll know. I have enjoyed them..then again I also enjoyed shooting the tommy, the FAL, and pretty much everything short of a bazooka...but what do I know about guns except that shooting the converted AR was a hell of a lot cheaper(for me).

So far everything you fellas have said sounds about right. Extra fouling from dirty burning .22 powder but way cheaper than constantly shooting 5.56.
I have read a review that said the phosphate finished bolt carrier fouled up more than a polished one. I guess the SS one will not be as bad.
Thanks for the input.

Ya .22 rimfire ammo is dirty shit. There is nothing more dirty that .22 . BUT it's 'Cheep Trigger Time'. If you just do/buy a dedicated .22 rimfire Upper then it's just the way it is. but you can just swap back and forth from 556 to .22lr and still keep the same muscle memory smooth and fast with the same lower & the same mechanics of the AR platform.
For semi-auto, The thing is, a 10/22 ruger is about the best shooting & accurate in .22lr . also has the about the same amount of trickass after-market parts available as the AR platform does. but then you have two different rifles instead of two uppers.
For lots of .22lr trigger time Personally for me, I just use my AR's as is in Centerfire and build 10/22's for accurate .22lr plinking & varminting. If you have not already own a 10/22 or have built a bunch of them before. there is a lot to be said for just having one nice 10/22 in your stable of shooters.
Also & basically like an AR platform. 10/22 platform is the same in respect too. Once you build one, you have built and shot them all. I think there are @ least like 4-million 10/22 been built and sold since the 60's. & that's kind of the same mentality as building small block Chevy's. . there is Cheep and abundant high performance parts out there for the choosing. so you get the best bang for your buck-$$ .
also If you decide to go the rimfire Upper platform route, they sell just Upper .22lr conversion kits & they work. But using your same .223/556 Upper for .22lr, & just changing out to the bolt/carrier/spring Kit. You won't be getting any accuracy for your satisfaction as the barrel Bore is .224 and slightly bigger than .22 Cal. . So it is better to just get a dedicated .22lr AR Upper & not a simple Upper conversion kit . Also your AR barrel will be better and you wont be Bore Fouling it-up with firing Rimfire out it.

If you want some seriously insane plinking, get the fully legal, 10/22 Gatlin gun mod....for cheap but awesome shooting, it is the king!
(oh shit....i'm hijacking this thread, aren't I? Sly)
