Crosswind
If the wind is blowing right to left at exit, which way will the nose of the canopy tend to point on opening? (assuming good pack job, body position, etc.)

Re: [78RATS] Crosswind
Surely it will point to the right (into the wind), from what i understand the wind will blow your PC to the left and the tail will follow, thus opening into the wind. Uh... I think Crazy

Re: [78RATS] Crosswind
Im gonna start only jumping in headwinds. Parachutes open into the wind. The stronger the better! Ok no.

I jumped a 270ft tower in winds gusting 20mph from left to right, now i wouldn't normally do this but id been working all day with those pains in the ass called skydivers. So i was rather drunk and decided to go for it.

Solid 90 right and hauling down wind. Turned around and landed uneventfully.

Re: [78RATS] Crosswind
i've found that it's slightly more likely to open into the wind. but if it's a decent crosswind, it will usually open either up wind or down wind, and much less chance of on heading... at least in low airspeed (short) delays. that is just my personal experience and observation.Tongue

Re: [78RATS] Crosswind
Light to medium wind will normally open into the wind on SD jumps because the wind takes the canopy and puts in a shoulder low scenario to the relative wind on deployment. Stronger winds tend to turn downwind more to the object 180sh due to the canopy taking you.
Take care,

Re: [base283] Crosswind
i was told that when jumping into headwind / cross wind, you should take a delay (object permitting) which allows you to generate enough speed on opening to overcome the force of said opposing wind.

jumped a 400' freestander with 10ish headwind, 3 seconds, both of us on heading, no problems. (A was also in a sherrif's front yard)

Re: [kcollier] Crosswind
400' freestander and you jumped INTO the wind?? Was the other side not landable? That just sounds silly to me. . .
Plan for the worst hope for the best. . .if you had a 180 youda been FUCKED. NO way you're turning that bitch around on time to avoid the tower. Unless you're a straight gangsta ninja. . .in which case I concede Tongue

Re: [PikeyBASE] Crosswind
Were you close to getting blown into the river?

Re: [gofastmax] Crosswind
Was our 270ft free stander near the old DZ. I have very nearly landed in that river before though.

Re: [epibase] [frijol][pikey] Crosswind
thx for clarifying, i'd probably remember better if i logged my jumps... regardless, it was fun, and i still consider that basically the sherriff's front yard. close as i'd like to come to jumping with police, but then i dont land in police parking lots in the downtown of my city

Well shit with those conditions I'da jumped too!Angelic

That's big for an ATT style fs, very nice. With that much altitude to play with, why would you not jump at least 90 off from headwind and turn to fly to the LZ? Was there a fairly long treeline that you had to fly over to get to the field in the direction you jumped?

Not always the case, look at GreenMachine's video Oops. The PC very quickly gets blown from right to left and that was the way the nose went.

Re: [hikeat] [frijol][pikey] Crosswind
tower was set in the treeline - exiting off corners puts you over trees, worse shape for an off heading in the wrong direction

I admit that I didn't study the video that hard, but it looked to me that like GreenMachine used his normal shitty standing exit which likely led to his off heading. Luckily he pitched way early. Any significant airspeed and he's backsliding right into the tower (see #29)

.... because the tail-pocket, being more heavy, stays behind(?)

.... with multi things get more complicated I guess
