Apex DP or Perigee Pro
I'm starting to look for a new base rig. Most of my jumps will still be 4-5s SD jumps but I'm planning on heading to some of the cliffs to start doing some terminal and wingsuiting. I've been looking at two rigs mostly, the Apex DP and the Asylum Perigee Pro. I've heard great things about the Perigee, but the Apex seems to look cleaner. Anyone have any thoughts or comments on those two choices. I was originally looking at a Blackjack for the canopy, but am now leaning towards the Seven. Thanks.

i have jumped 4-5 sec slider down a lot and i cant see nothing special in that.
for example Isenflu 4sec, Budapest chimney 4-5sec.

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
Tomato - Tomäto.

Both will work fine.

but here's the main decision criteria :

Do you like Apex/BR ?
Do you jump in SoCal ?
do you like the (uesless at 4-5 sec delays) top tuck cover flap ?
do you like your riser covers to open from the inside out ?
get the DP !

Do you like Asylum/CR ?
do you jump in Norcal ?
do you like a simple wraparound pin cover ?
do you like your riser covers to open from the outside in?
get the PerigeePro !

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
I'm currently jumping a Reactor 4 with a Fox canopy. I jump mostly in Canada and there are only a handful of us in my area. Everyone seems to always jump the same kind of gear, so it's difficult to get a good/practical look at what's available out there. Would love to hear from someone who's tried both the Perigee Pro and the Apex DP to hear their comparisons and preferences. It's difficult to make decisions without some hands on experience and all you have are pictures and short descriptions on the internet.

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
buy both. that's what i did. but i didn't stop at just those two makes either. it's the only way you really find out what you like best. my opinion about gear is really only suitable for me.Wink and i like some things and dislike some things about them all.

Re: [blitzkrieg] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
I understand that your opinions are only good for you, But I am stiil interested in hearing them. I will obviously have to make my own decisions in the end but I'm hoping to broaden my knowledge of these two rigs by hearing what people like and dislike about them.

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
as blitzkrieg says, you will never know the best solution for you until you try them all.

IF you wish to follow advice, consider giving more weight to those you can easily contact. you probably will have questions after you get whatever. being able to get sound advice is great. it can make sense for a local krewe to feature a certain manufacturer. people can help each other out.

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
If you are leaning towards buying a Seven, which I highly recomend, Marty at Asylum will have better knowledge of properly fitting the canopy with the container specifically to your preference.

Both are well built rigs that are safe and do the job well. If you can, get your hands on both rigs and take a look at them to to compare, and make your own decision. Taking the extra time to learn about the rigs will be worth it it the long run.

Just so you know, I am biased towards Asylum. But, Rig preference is quite personal, what one jumper finds to work well for them, could be the complete opposite for another...

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
buy a gargoyal i have gargoyal and apex dp like both but gargoyal is better lookingWink if that matters for you.. the apex are genaraly easyer to close (depends of size and so byt still) the pack job never gets trashed when closing the apex.
Shortcut
Re: [pesos] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
I am highly biased toward asylum, but I agree that both containers are well made and will more than likely open if assembled correctly. Either way, I think the seven is the way to go with canopy, especially if you plan on wingsuiting. It is lower bulk than similar canopies, which can make a difference on those longer hikes, plus it flies awesome. If you decide to combine gear, just make sure you get everything sized correctly to pack up right. Oh, and obviously norcal is better than socal so go with asylum.

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
don't even consider.. go for the DP!

Re: [harris] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
ok, so i'll bite. here is my silly opinionated comparison:

Apex DP:

Construction/Craftmanship -
it's built sturdy, but lacks certain refinements like in the area of the chest strap where it's cut off and hot knifed (tends to leave a sharp edge of nylon against your chest). also, very minor stitching has worked it's way out in some areas with only normal use.

Comfort -
relatively lightweight and very comfortable.

Closing Sequence -
Apex tends to make their containers "roomy", so they are extremely easy to pack (which is good for the novice) i use this rig for low freefalls and keep my pin tension extremely low, it's also beneficial because i can re-pin it at exit without a pull-up cord. if i were using this for more than slider off, i would order it one size smaller than suggested. pin flap is a pretty standard evolution with a bonus top tuck tab. in my use of course, not even necessary.

Appearance -
eh, they look ok.

Perigee Pro:

Construction/Craftmanship -
solid construction. the only thing i really don't like is the tendency of the top corners gaping open and exposing the canopy.

Comfort -
seemed fine, nothing special or out of the ordinary. granted, mine for some reason never quite fit well (which is why i sold it) but while i jumped it all over the world many times, i never complained. she was good to me.

Closing Sequence -
pin flap is tried and true... simple and effective. packs nice and snug, true fit with appropriate rated tarp.

Appearance -
save the aforementioned gaps, it's a tight and clean looking wedge. looks good to me.

Gargoyle:

Construction/Craftmanship -
SOLID. over-built even. very nicely built. only thing i don't like is the hard (steel) cut-away housings (dead weight). don't see them as being necessary for the base environment. although at this point, you could probably have them built without. also has nice bridle protection to the BOC.

Comfort -
very comfortable, but tends to be a little heavier than the others.

Closing Sequence -
slightly annoying, as these are the only rigs i own i have to close left then right. i also make it a point for my pins to be seated from left to right >, so that when i seat the closing flap it can only inadvertently push the pins further "in". other than that, they pack simply, nice and snug.

Appearance -
personally, i think this is the best looking rig out there. especially with their newer models. everything is contained, clean, and functional.

Maybe you are made of steel then. The only time I took a 4 sec delay slider off, I got slammed and suffered minor whiplash. Pirate

I had a Helium without hard housings - it had intergrated risers :)

but in all seriousness, if they refuse to do soft, just rip the bitches out and put in soft housings, it's not that hard to do.

I would hope to god that if I try to cut that bitch away while spinning, the yellow cable would be too locked up by the Gforces, and I will still have a chance of survival instead of cutting away inflight from my only canopy.

Re: [SpeedPhreak] Apex DP or Perigee Pro
all the rigs i rated were built new for me.

i've seen some others like that too, but might be something silly that slipped through the QC.

in any case, they're solid rigs and i love jimmy and marta... so i've never had an issue with them. it's just in comparison, there are things i prefer in the others. Tongue

with that in mind... i have a sweet Rigging Adventures container built by Mark Kruse that is very nice too... and i loved using it in switzerland on my last trip. i was also seen wearing it on the ramp at bridgeday. but you just don't see as many of those around, but a very nice rig too!

Mine wasn't hot knifed either. But then again, I got a custom 1" strap. Its soft but still works.

Interesting. I wonder if it's a work flow issue or maybe someone in the quality control department was hungover?

You made me run out to my car, through the snow, in my slippers to pull mine out of the stash bag and double check.

I've got the removable hook knife pocket over that area, but mine has a nice confluence wrap and a three point cross stitch with the raw end neatly folded under it all.

Seems like someone made a boo boo on yours and forgot a step...

just looked at the stuff laying around :

Vertex (1), Prism (1), Reactor4 - all have the hotknifed raw edge, just like on the pics.

PrerigeePro, Perigee, Perigee II, Gargoyle, Helium, Warlock - all nice and smooth.

If that really worries you, take some binding tape and bind it to the raw edge and the rest of the webbing. should take about 5 minutes of your time.
