General BASE

Lurking, Trolling......maybe learning.
I've been cruising this site for a couple of months now. And yes.I've commented on a few small things but nothing of a technical or experience based nature.
I started writing a book a few months back that includes some of the people listed on the base fatality list, and found amazing info about them within this great community. Now my dilemma is this. I've never jumped, I've always wanted to and have signed up for my 7 level AFF course here near Atlanta just to get myself better aquainted with the gear. But now I have to ask, would it be out of line to try a one time jump at maybe Bridge day or Perrine if I found someone willing to help me get my toes wet?

Re: [RestlessWriter] Lurking, Trolling......maybe learning.
Bridge day requires more than 7 jumps.
Shortcut
Re: [RestlessWriter] Lurking, Trolling......maybe learning.
so you lurk, and knowing the current recommendation of 200+ jumps, you still ask ?

yes, you would be out of line, but you will probably find someone willing.

keep in mind getting your toes wet can turn into legs broken in a very short time.

WTF is wrong with everyone, why is there such a mass of people coming here looking for shortcuts ???

BTW, your claim of being in the process of writing a book doesn't entitle you to jack shit. You may never finish it, or you may finish it, and it may suck balls. Either way, breaking yourself is easy, please do so w/o a parachute.

is this an idiot Friday, did I miss the Public Announcement ?

Might be worth reading this from just this week before you enquire any further bud.

Hi everybody! I took the EMT course in college, and am writing a book about doctors. I was Just wondering if you think it would be cool to try open heart surgery, just once, to see what it's like -- you know, get my fingers wet?

Re: [thrillseek] Lurking, Trolling......maybe learning.
i didn't mean to start a swarm,
I was told 200 jumps was a recommendation and that a lot of base jumpers started out as base only with no aff training at all. I didn't know that at about bridge day, but I'm glad thay have a set standard. With everyone being so adament on this I'll continue writing this book "which in the editors opinion so far is great" and just base after i get the canopy time recommended.
As harsh as the answers might have been I really appreciate the feedback I've recieved around here.
Thanks

Re: [RestlessWriter] Lurking, Trolling......maybe learning.
Doing the recommended amount of skydives isnt just about "getting canopy time" you will have to learn how to control and deal with freefalling. Handle stress situations, handling situations where you will die if you don't act correctly. What if you mess up and land in the river? you could drown, people have drowned there before! What if you mess your landing up, shattering your legs? would it be worth it?

If you are writing about people on the BFL, i guess you're familiar to the rate at which people die in the sport! Its not a weekend retreat! And i can't possibly imagine someone just saying hello to a stranger that hasn't even got an A-license. and setting them off any bridge! To me that shows total disregard for safety!

If i were you, i would finish the AFF, do 50-100 skydives and perhaps get to know basejumpers who happens to jump at your dropzone! Or, ask on here again!

I think i might know the reason for the sudden rush of these requests.. It must be the BASE jumping feature in GTAIV: The Ballad of Gay Tony!

For now, im content with seeing you awesome people through my viewfinder. And jumping out of planes with some of you! But somewhere down the line i will be ready too! But i WILL have the proper experience!

is this the latest fad for a New Year's Resolution?

we certainly have had a lot of folks popping out with very similar questions the last week or so... it just seems totally lame to repeat everything yet again.

thanks to 14000andfalling for the link to one of those discussions.

btw...
if you are writing a book about people there are ways to get more familiar with BASE and it's participants besides jumping. without making contact and developing relationships, I question how accurate your portrait can be?

Bridge jumping to learn jumping!
An interesting thought would be if you had to complete your bridge jumping levels, before you could jump from an ariplane. I know this is like swearing in the church, but just to let one do a few bridge jump with proper training I see no problem at all. All in a good and professional way of course.

Sort of like jumping from a tethered balloon before you get to jump from a plane.... Like how many members of the British forces?

Of course not, you'd need to get money too. I've seen it done BTW, and on a round, only unbelieveable luck prevented major injury.

This topic has admittedly been done to death, but after watching the above vid I think it's only fair to assume that some newbie skydivers (myself included) will be thinking 'Why not me?'
Please note this is not in any way a dig at Miles D, the Red Bull boys or the competition winner (lucky bastard!Tongue) I have total respect and awe for all of them.

Re: [14000andfalling] Bridge jumping to learn jumping!
He could have done a bit more diving training. The exits was so bad, I would kept him on level one until he could do solid exits.

Re: [434] Bridge jumping to learn jumping!
Hehe yeah I did notice the bridge exits were a little sketchy, i'll give him his dues though...He got through it all unbroken, and all for entering a competition!

Re: [14000andfalling] Bridge jumping to learn jumping!
i fuckin got my
A license in 7 months, broke as a joke, and that included pawning everythng i owned, selling my parents car to a scrapyard for 500 bones, and bouncing checks from myself to myself and pulling out the cash, almost landing in serious shit with the bank. 3 years later my first base jump.
this dick gets his
aff done in one day and a perrine trip? lucky ass sonofabitch!

But Chris at least you worked for it and got it the fun way and not handed to you.

I don't know if I would consider selling your parents car and writing bad checks to yourself as working for it. Tongue
Shortcut
WTF
I do NOT consider selling your parents
car & writing bad checks working for it.

+1

Doing construction work, packing rigs,
or even spending 50 hours a week in
a boring offce is actually working for it.

I found jumping after graduate school
which meant paying for it was not a
real big deal... on the other hand if
I had started early maybe I would
be a little better or dead, ha ha.

Re: [GreenMachine] WTF
And to think, I wasted my boob job money on AFF when I couldve just sold my parents car and bounced checks to myself!
