Oops on my 168th jump
So this morning I wake up, re-rig & pack my rig,
drive to the object, climb up to 1050 feet (fuck),
and ended up being lucky to be alive.

First 180 With Line-Twist.

The Luck of The Irish was with me as I flew between
a set of guyed wires... and for extra fun flew back
through a lower set of wires on purpose.

Lessons Learned - counting to 6 does not mean you
have actually taken 6 seconds, in fact video looks
more like a 3-4 second delay.

Oh well, I have never claimed to be an all-star Blush
Love & Gratitude to the 2 cool dudes with me today!

Flame away all you player haters Tongue

Glad you are OK man! really glad!Cool
How many line twists?
How long did the canopy sniveled? did it?
Was it you spinning under an 180 extracted canopy(most probable) or
the canopy turned 180 during inflation after lines stretch?

Line twists is my nightmare so please excuse me if asking to to many questions ...

In reply to:
and for extra fun flew back through a lower set of wires
hey if flying between a set of guyed wires while in line twists isn't extra fun already .... well I'm throwing the towel Tongue

would it be to much to ask for the video?Blush

uh-hum, did som1 say Video!!s

but seriously, if your slider up and ready for a 5 to 6 second delay, and pull early and while you have slower airspeed to help along with your slider up packjob and throw in some bad body position and some bad factor X's and well...... off heading with line twist....

dude , Next time relax a little and enjoy the "View".....and rememeber it's called delay for a reason! Wink

glad your ok and glad your humble enough to share and oh yeah ,,,, Video,,,,,,Videokkkk and im guessing if you say 3 to 4 seconds it's more like 2 3/4 sec. Unsure video, video, video, video....gren green,,greeen, machine. green machine,,,,,,

Awesome! Kudos for you for having the skills to get out of that sticky situation. Smile

Re: [GreenMachine] Oops on my 168th jump
my 2 cents...
I would never count on a base jump if the delay is more than 2 seconds. Use your eyes to determine the pulling time, much much more reliable then counting...
Counting all the way up to 6 goes into the same category as jumping with a 30 foot static line :-)

I stopped counting when the delays got into the double digits... I didn't have enough fingersTongue

Counting works for some people I guess, but i found that if i try count in freefall my timing becomes very screwed up. I eye ball it now Wink

Glad to hear you're ok Smile

That's probably because the majority of his jumps are slider down. We all counted on our first few (or several) slider up jumps.

But I agree with Michi that it's a habit you should kick as soon as possible. It's totally unreliable, and it distracts you from more important things. (like watching the ground, feeling the airflow and stabilizing yourself, tracking away from the object, etc.)

Glad you got away with it, GreenMachine. By the way, how strong was the tailwind? There was a tailwind, wasn't there?

You are right and I totally agree, in fact jumper #1
did just that along with a nice sweet ass gainer also.

RE: winds

Yes, tail wind and with the wisps of fog we could feel
and see it, I would guess maybe 8-10 MPH perfectly
splitting the sector we jumped into.

Since jumper #1 did so well I am sure the problem
was my short delay and maybe a bit of a vigorous
throw but not the winds nor the pack job.

RE: the line twists?

I think no more than 2 twists and they were at the
risers with a fully inflated canopy above me.

RE: counting

Usually I do not but this was my highest jump ever
and for some reason thought it would help... it
obviously did not. In the future I will use feel.

RE: video

Once I get a copy of it I will probably post it.

RE: pucker factor

Hmm, maybe 5, honestly I just focused on getting
the twists un-done, once I was in the other sector I
knew what a SNAFU it was but flying back through
a set of wires to land near jumper #1 was fine.

Soon as our gear was in the stash bags we sprinted
through 400+ yards of woods to get out of there...
it was not till I was standing in a parking lot, beer
in hand, watching the video did it really set in just
how fucking lucky I was!
Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] Oops on my 168th jump
just my .02 but if you are flying towards an object or wires you should probably deal with that first rather then the line twists
Shortcut
Re: [doinker] Oops on my 168th jump
It depends where the line twists are....
If they are above the risers you can't reach up and turn the canopy.
I have a friend who tried to climb above them, it didnt work,
If they are in the risers, turning the canopy is possible.
So It depends on the situation,

Gary

Glad to hear you're alright, and thanks for the story. I've never flown through wires, but I imagine it gets the adrenaline pumping.

Two thoughts from my (limited) slider-up antenna experience:

1) As others have said, there's nothing wrong with a healthy delay and a visual deployment cue. I always aim for 7-8 seconds from 1080 feet. With that and a good 4-second track, you'll be nowhere near the wires on deployment. But, almost all my S-U jumps have been in daylight. If you're jumping at night, subtract a second or two from your delay.
2) If you've got 'em and can use 'em, wear tracking pants. The distance you cover in seconds 4-7 can be huge!

Here is the vid of Jeb's recent building strike. The line twists were right above the risers. Look at 1:13. It looks like he was in fact able to get above the twists and flatten out the canopy a bit before the strike then he was able to turn it away from the building.

Re: [epibase] Oops on my 168th jump
One thing to remember, jeb is tall, and has long arms, not everyone could have done that.
Also you can see when he trys to turn the canopy he reachs for the rear left c/d line group, but after contacting the build the canopy turns to the right.
Im not say one method is better than the other, its just not posible for everyone to do that.
I guess its different for each situation,

Its funny, i trip balls at 1500ft and have genuine honest to God fear for my life, so scared i physically shake.

Yet on my first sub 200ft freefall i was pretty mellow, calm and relaxed.

Slider off is just what i know best and its my comfort zone. I always count on big stuff due to that.

Also, try seeing the "green" thing called the planet at 3am with no moon. Its shades of utter blackness and blacker.

Re: [milkflyrockclimb] Oops
The real trick is tracking above this bit of blackness that you know is there but you still can't see all the while counting your delay in your head and trying to look between your legs to count the number of light sets you have blown past.

Tom is a victim of being a florida jumper with nothing but short sticks to jump from. You don't really get to use to knowing what stuff looks like. I agree as high as he was a tracking suit would have been great. Glad your ok man!!! Lets see the sketchy vid!

Re: [GreenMachine] Oops
it looks to me that while you may have had a 180, your canopy did not. (bodies tend to rotate more than parachutes.)

I too am interested in what came out of your packjob and looked like it drifted down to land behind you.
Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] Oops on my 168th jump
OK, I watched it a few times. Since it's out there, here's my take on it.

Not a complete 180. No line twist. It had a 1/2 line twist due to opening facing backward. You chose the perfect spot to accidently fly through the guy wires. Tongue

For someone used to 0 to 2 second delays, it's not surprising the delay was 4 seconds, especially if counting was involved. Finding a good visual queue will help out in the future. I bet if it was a 1700 foot jump, you'd have settled in, looked back at the antenna, and at the ground and taken a 10. A deeper delay is doable but 10 is a very common delay from that height.

From 1000, you're in the *scary* range where traditionally, more off headings occur.

What's with the hat? Laugh

In reply to:
i noticed the risers were together due to twists, so it could be difficult to grab only 1 rear riser. but maybe a toggle?

Would you be concerned that toggle input could not be undone due to the riser twist? Obviously it might be better than eating the object, but just a question that came to mind.
Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] Oops
That's some Pilot Chute oscillation/wind deflection just as the canopy extracts. Looks like that could be the cause of the offheading. What PC were you using?
Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] Oops on my 168th jump
Looks to me like the PC came out, and WAY up to the left side of your body.

Looks like a nice cross wind is the culprit?!?!?

Was that your stash bag that floated off? I know you said you didn't like to put your SB in the pocket on the rig...?

first of all Mr. Green. wtf didn't u climb to the top?

second of all wTf didn't u have a POV viddy available? u no if u BASE u got 2 have a POV or your not a BASEer.

third it wasn't a 4 second delay more like 3.

forth: thanks for being humble and showing your f-up's. i wouldnt' show you mine. but im a dick. and have major ego issues.

NEXT TIME: climb all the way up, unless theres a really good reason not to. (safety, wierd shit up top etc.)

fifth: LEARN HOW TO JUMP/EXIT IN A TRACK POSTION AND PULL IN ONE. DON'T DO THAT FUCKIN' SKYDIVE PULL. PULL IN A FUCKING TRACK , EXIT/JUMP IN A TRACK POSITTION. AND THANKS FOR YOUR HUMBLEness.

good day,

We did not climb to top because the other jumper had a time
constraint (work/gig). But in all honesty the first time I did
jump this antenna it was a solo and from 700 feet.

As for video requirements, ha ha, most think I am already
a camera whore, but no I did not bring a camera with me.
I used to often wear video for day blaze jumps but since
most of it still sits un-edited I have been less inclined.

Yeah dude, it was a quick 4 seconds, video captured 3 of it.

Thanks for the props about being open/humble.

Yes, my PC did misbehave like a trouble child on crack,
I am sure that helped with the mayhem, maybe it was
a crosswind there or just more of me fucking up.
