New guy on the scene!
Hey all, hows it going?

I'm a University student over in the UK on the second year of a Forensic Science course and have been thinking about taking up free-fall jumping for a while now, but have just gotten hooked to all the BASE jumping videos on youtube and want to get involved.

I was just wondering, how do you get started? Are there any courses out there, or do you just grab your gear and head to the nearest sky-scraper?

Thanks guys, hope to hear from you all soon :D

Re: [Calju] New guy on the scene!
Go do a Dropzone (skydiving place) do a AFF course, spend a year or two (and a lot of money) skydiving. Then when you have 250 skydives, come to Norway and to the BASE Course at Kjerag!

Don't rush it! I could probably find someone to chuck me off a cliff now with ease.. And im only at 100 skydives. But i don't intend to cut corners with something that could potentially kill me due do lack of proper experience!

Take it step by step, the right way! It will be worth all the effort when you get there!

Where in the UK are you?

You sound like the perfect student for our little experiment.

Me and my team mate are about to offer 1 lucky guy (or gal) the chance to complete sub 200ft BASE in an afternoon.

No parachuting experience required, we will pack and PCA you from the 4 objects (all below 200ft) and you will get your BASE number.

After that you are on your own if you survive.

My team mate think whoever is chosen will die, I think they will be fine.

Only one way to find out.

The course at Kjerag is excellent, but it is largely site specific. If he wants to jump in the UK, he'd be better served to have training that included slider down jumping (and hopefully static line rigging and PCA technique, too) to open up a wider range of objects to him, once he returns home.

Not that I'm saying he shouldn't do both. Because the jumps at Kjerag are quite likely to be a whole lot more fun.

Very good point! Never thought of that! For UK jumpers, having learnt how to do low stuff is probably worth even more! Is there even a single place in the UK that can be jumped slider up?

Yeah, I have a couple of +700 metre As within casual driving distance of me. The Mendip hill interfere with all the signals so they need tall masts.

+700 metre A's? You must be kidding....

you clearly have no idea.
the mighty limestone formations of the mendip hills need quite a mast to transmit over it.

i also heard world famous DTM is honing his massive aerials there...

O yes, I have. The tallest mast on the planet is in Nt. Dakota, US : 628,8 meter. There are no +700m masts and certainly not in the UK.

And BTW, the highest point of the Mendip Hills is Beacon Batch : 325 m...

Re: [lsm] New guy on the scene!
the mast is 700+ FEET not metres and access is such a problem im sure it has never been jumped.

Yeah my bad, feet not metres

Re: [junk] New guy on the scene!
Not that it matters.
Fact is its still slider up

Re: [TeamRB1] New guy on the scene!
Why PCA? I think odds of survival would be way too high just PCA. Make the fucker freefall them all...

Forensic science student wanting to base jump? Thats like a fireman wanting to go around starting fires.

Re: [udder] New guy on the scene!
We decided on PCA's because if the A was not 190ft we would call it sub 135ft BASE.
We don't want to confuse a already hyper student by changing deployment methods after 1 jump.

Then again we could save time and go from lower down the A.
We could also change the S from a 135ft to a 111ft and make it 130ft BASE.

We feel the that with the B being the 1st jump/object (going to do it in order B,A,S,E) 130ft is as low as we should go for safety reasons.

We feel that after 3 jumps they should be fine to qualify for their number on a 105ft E.

Re: [Zipit990] New guy on the scene!
THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!

We are using it as an experiment, we have both jumped this cliff and if all goes well it is very straight forward.

I really believe it is possible to get someone their number in an afternoon without any prior parachuting experience and we intend to prove it.

A lot will depend on the weight of the student.
My canopies are 280 and 300. I want a light student so they have to use my team mates rigs. That way I get to jump.

If we chose a bigger student who uses my rigs then, (if my team mate feels like it) we may take the to slightly higher objects and make it sub 300ft BASE.

So any takers?

I'll do it. I'd love to have no prior parachuting experience.

a BASE number is just that, a number. Seems to me that you're missing the point. If your whole goal is to just get a BASE #, I wouldn't want to jump with you. ...just sayin'...picking up body parts could get tedious. Pirate
