World's 500 Highest Bridges Website / China opens 2 highest bridges

Hi everyone!

After several long years of research and travel, I have finally finished the first ever website on the World's 500 Highest Bridges.

Several BASE jumpers that attended the 2008 Tiankeng Cave event in China would be surprised at just how many high bridges were being constructed nearby including the world's highest suspension and arch bridges on the nearby Hurong highway that opened in November. This incredible highway has 9 bridges that exceed 650 feet / 200 meters in height.

Further south in Guizhou Province, China opened the world's second greatest high bridge highway from Guiyang to Kunming with 2 suspension bridges that exceed 1,100 feet / 330 meters in height. The whole region of western China is so loaded with high bridges they now have one half of the world's 100 highest bridges. By 2020 it would not be surprising if China had 2/3rds of the world's 100 highest bridges which is simply amazing. In North America,

Discussions have been underway for a BASE event at one of Guizhou's highest bridges so hopefully that will happen sometime later this year.

In North America, Mexico will be the place to visit with several record breaking spans under construction on two new highways.

So enjoy the website and contact me with any questions you may have. Also be sure to read the "Introduction" page to understand height measurements as well as why reservoir bridges were also included even though they make up a small percentage of high bridges.

As always, keep safe!

Regards,

Eric Sakowski

Great job on the website. I met Eric a few years ago and we scouted several new bridges in my area. He is very familiar with the dynamics of BASE jumping and he's definitely on our side.

TongueSweet. Now you just need to add the description of the landing areas Smile

The only one I jumped also has the exit (more or less center of the bridge) marked on it Laugh

Wow - that's a fantastic achievement! Nice work, Eric. That highest bridge is extraordinary. Wingsuit proximity flying from a span - who'd have thought?

Yeah, this is a great find, too:

A campground and wilderness area is located about a mile downstream of the crossing where you can hike along the south side of the creek and view the bridges from below. The site is a favorite of *****-area BASE jumpers.

I barely looked at your site. It has incredible detail and fabulous images.

Did you ever get arrested or otherwise in trouble accessing these sites?

I never got arrested or caught walking along catwalks underneath a bridge but walking across long railway bridges is always scary. If a train suddenly comes and you cannot run off it in time they have little platforms spaced at intervals sticking out the side across the length of the bridge but their integrity is questionable on a structure that is likely more than a 100 years old.

I'm probably the only bridge photographer in the world who will always try to walk out onto a railway bridge as I always want to get a shot of the main pier or trestle tower as it descends the full height of the bridge to the river. You never see such images on railfan websites.

For certain bridges I have had private land owners tell me to leave - the key is to never ask and always play a little dumb. Once I've got my photos, I don't mind a little yelling. The same applies to construction sites where hard hats are required and you will never get permission to get on-site anyway.

New Mexico's 2nd highest bridge is within a high level government area that will get you questioned if you loiter or try to take pictures around it so that is a bridge to avoid doing anything other than driving or walking across it.

Japan just opened their highest bridge ever last week on January 15th in Gifu prefecture. It is the first Japanese bridge to exceed 200 meters in height though the arch bridge near Hiroshima is nearly as high.

I thought maybe the world's 3 known Japanese BASE jumpers will be interested.

RE: Tiankeng 2008.

We were not suprised at all. In fact, we saw several high bridges under construction, close to Fengjie city. We considered jumping them but in the long run we only stayed 1 night in Fengjie and opted for the hotel Wink
