Hey all! I got tired of checking the winds at my favorite local E only to find that they were awesome yesterday and 80 gusting 120 today, and wrote an application that I thought might interest others.

I've attached the application below. A word of warning -- while this ought to work fine, it's "very alpha". Let me know if you try it out and have problems, and I'll make changes! The application will keep its dock icon updated to reflect the speed and direction of the winds at any Environment Canada (Edit to add: and now, Weather Network) site you choose, and will colour code itself for the strength of the winds.

By default it watches a station in the mountains west of Calgary. If you want to make changes, go under preferences. The "tag" settings probably aren't of any interest, but the "Page URL" setting is the one you want to use to change where your data is coming from. The URL is for Environment Canada's "Past 24 Hour Conditions" table -- if you're not sure you've got the right page, copy the one that's there and find the corresponding one for the area you're interested in. Still not sure? PM me!

The preferences should stick now; I've updated the attachment in the first email. Will work on making this compatible with the Weather Network, too, tonight and tomorrow.

Hey all! One more update... I've dropped "Canadian" for the post's title, since the program should be able to handle data from The Weather Network now. In the preferences, I've got a couple of "example settings" put together -- one for Environment Canada, and one for The Weather Network.

I've run this by a sample American, whose Weather Network web pages also (strangely, to me) show wind speeds in km/h. If yours uses another unit, you may have better results substituting that where I've got "km/h". And of course, PM me if you can't figure out how to get this to work with your own sites.
