First Timer!
Alright so recently I've had a urge to do something spectacular and something that will get my blood flowing. Ive always had a nose for the most extreme and exciting things you get out of life. One thing I have yet to try is skydiving/base jumping. I've heard and researched alot about both of these topics. One thing that puzzles me is that I am a very fast learner when it comes to anything...What I'm trying to get at is if I am going to start my carrier as a BASE jumper how many times would I need to skydive, if any, until I'm ready to become a BASE jumper. Dose it have to do with how you feel and how comfortable, or is it the level of experence? Constructive repliles please :) haha

Re: [Abcfcom45] First Timer!
What other X-treme things do you do?

I would think 500-1000 skydives should do the trick.

Say no more my friend, I understand completely.

Skip BASE, much too boring, this is where it is at.

Extreme Ironing Gear Store

Just the simple training for skydiving and the required skill building jumps will set you back thousands of dollars and waste countless hours of your time before you will most likely have the proper skill set to make regular base jumps and avoid injury.

pshhh! Forget it! Iron on brother!

I do alot of mountain climbing/hiking, river kayaking, snowboarding, mountain biking, love the wake boarding, and surfing when I get the chance. I just feel that jumping from 8000 feet in the air going 150 mph with just your body can be life changing! especially if something goes wrong you know what I mean? but really 500 jumps first? Don't get me wrong im not questioning your expertize on the matter but don't you think thats alittle excessive, like how much can you possibly learn after lets say 20 jumps? And please excuss intaollorance on this matter, truth is I really dont know so I want to find out. Dont take it the wrong way ha

you researched a lot? that would be cool.
does that mean you have read all of these Articles?
have you lurked here for awhile? (you are asking a fairly common question. rarely do the questioners attempt to help themselves by reading here.)

Re: [Abcfcom45] First Timer!
Ok dude, here's the straight deal. You absolutely have to allow yourself time flying a parachute (and your body) before you get into BASE. Canopy control is something that you just can't learn in 20 skydives, regardless of how super-cool and smart you are. It takes repetitive jumping in order to instinctively respond to a situation when things don't go as planned, which is more common than you think, or see in the various and sundry extreme videos on youtube.

All of that Extreme bullshit is just that. Extreme is what you make of it.

Take the time to learn and practice through skydiving so you don't end up dead from a case of stupidity. Re-visit the idea after 500 skydives, and be honest with yourself as to your competency. Stupid hurts, and dead is permanent.

Re: [GreenMachine] thrillseek gets BONUS points
it will take at least a couple hundred skydives with BASE in mind during training to gain the skills to start safely BASE jumping. i've been badly hurt before because I didn't follow this advice. don't repeat the same mistake.

Thrillseek that's the best advice I've gotten so far, I can appreciate your frustration with me, but I don't have some macho man complex with a death wish so your advice wont go to waste. Thank you very much and I will take everything all of you have said into consideration. Maybe I can put these questions aside for a second and just get the first jump over with first right? ha

Doesn't have to be that way though. I remember Maggot pca-ing mannequins off of buildings a few years ago with favorable results. One would surmise that a corpse riddled with rigor mortis would have perfect tracking position right off the edge given the proper launch.

If you want to be really extreme put on a captain America shirt, a straw hat, and put your dick in a light socket while drinking some boones farm and asphyxiating yourself with a hello kitty belt.

this behooves me to go find some powder, not just one iota of it, but perhaps a plethora of powder, since I currently have a derth of it, and I consider in this day and age, that ... fuck ... the Greaseman is here! http://www.dwponline.com/...e/Bits/Phil_Cron.mp3

Re: [Abcfcom45] First Timer!
A brief summary of my experience getting into BASE (since that's all I can really speak to with any amount of certainty or knowledge):

AFF: $1600 (?) back in 2003

~300 skydives @ an average of $22/jump: $6,600

Skydiving gear purchased over the course of those 300 jumps: ~$8,000

FAA Senior Parachute Rigger certificate (confidence in/knowledge of gear): ~$1400, a little over a month of my evenings.

Time spent online reading posts, articles, getting a sense of the community so I didn't come across as lazy/ignorant when I first posted: 2 years, countless hours

BASE specific container/canopy: ~$2500

Second skydiving container and reserve that would fit my BASE canopy to actually fly it before jumping off an object: ~$1,400

First Jump Course with reputable gear manufacturer (experienced, reputable, long time in sport): ~$1800 (including travel expenses etc.)

protective gear, appropriate pilot chutes, etc. ~$400

another trip back to a forgiving, legal object for continuing education (coincided with another first jump course so I could ask questions)

And now, with 17 jumps from 4 objects and all that preparation, I am really just beginning the journey to becoming a "BASE jumper".

Take it slow, do your homework. The objects, the community, and the sport are not going to disappear before you're ready.

Good luck on your journey. It doesn't stop once you've made a few jumps.

Cheers,
Sol
