I really did not want to write this because I am a little embarrassed but figured I had to. This morning around 3 a.m. I got to my object I had planned to jump. Beautiful night with light winds just very very cold. Climbed to the top of the object and was on the top. Pulled out my P.C. as I was walking out toward the edge so I could attach my static line. As I got close to the edge I hit a patch of ice and me left leg went off the object and I quickly fallowed. As I fell I pitched my PC and the canopy opened surged forward as I pulled hard on a rear riser to avoid a tree line I hit a 30 foot tree. I grabbed the tree pulled my break away handle and slid down the rest of the 20 feet to the ground. BE CAREFUL OUT ON THOSE ICY EXIT POINTS! This could have gone very very bad for me. I had no injuries and was very lucky.

Holy shit dude! Glad your still with us. Were you jumping alone? You gotta be very careful cutting away from high in trees, I know a guy who seriously fucked himself up from cutting away from about that same height!

If your gonna be jumping solo in wooded areas, maybe build yourself a rope bag and practice self rescues. My buddy jumps one at the new, and I plan on making one at some point.

I was jumping alone. A few family members knew where I was, when I was supposed to return and I had a cell phone on me. I was hugging the tree pretty tight when the moving finally stopped LOL the tree had a few branches on it (some breaking because of the ice on it) I was confident I could make it down when I chopped the canopy. The stupid tree line is really not easy to hit. Its almost right under the object so unless this happens you probably won't hit it. The object is on a family members property and in order to get the canopy down without anyone seeing a flapping canopy on a tree line in the middle of a field I cut the tree down before the sun came up (with a fucking axe so it wouldn't make to much noise!). This isn't a big problem because its the families property and its a farm and he harvests trees for heat anyway. This was in north eastern NY.

Crikey - well done for keeping your shit together & pitching... How high was the object? Also, I'd be interested to know if you had a bungee on your bridle??

The object is 250'. I had a 48ZP PC without a bungee on the bridle.

Scary shit. At least now you know 250' is high enough to freefall, huh?

The canopy really had no flare because it was never in full flight. But I buried the toggles for a quick second right before I hit the tree. Of course it happened way to fast for me to realize what was going on. If I had popped the breaks quick enough instead of being on the rears trying to turn I may have been able to go over the tree line and go into the next field. It was going to be close either way.

...except maybe walking away from a base jump that goes way wrong.
