Just came from viewing the movie, and cant say that I ever had any movie, docu or youtube video gave me a sensation that close to flying a wingsuit...
Amazing work, in terms of acting, animation (3d animator myself), and overal visual experience..

Overwhelming, and thats an understatement...

Did anybody else feel like you were "Virtual Base Jumping?" In 3D, I was reaching for my Pilot Chute, while sitting in the theatre!

Matt,
You probably walked into the wrong theatre, because you SURE did not see AVATAR! If you did, you would have felt something.

I'm guessing you were on a mind-altering drug or you were sleeping during the film! It truly makes me wonder how such an emotionally charged story and magical special effects, could have no effect on you?

Hey I got to agree that the 3-D cliff soaring was pretty sweet and most of the animation was pretty cutting edge with the whole movie packed with color and action. Good movie because it was in the Big Screen, 3-D & has some flight scenes in the 3rd person viewing. All-in All it was a pretty good Animated Cartoon.
BUT, Hey. I also got to agree with (mattf101) , the 1st thing that popped in my mind with the story-line was it fuckin Smacked with ' Dances with wolves' & also some Pocahontas and a other simple plot structures that has all been seen 100 times in the theater. It was pretty predictable as far as the story line.
If I tryed harder. Maybe Like you, if I squinted my eyes more and dreamed of Harry Potter movie magic. It might have been like a fantasy BASE jump.

Well damn, sounds like I pooped in someone's Cheerios on that one. I think I just got told. Crazy

But yeah, on a more serious note, the CGI was great but overall, that movie sucked donkey scrotum. (and I can say that bc I am not a movie critic)Cool

If you confuse that with a BASE jump, you should probably jump more. Tongue

Dude, that might be kind of harsh on '761'. and I also got to disagree with that one too. Avatar, It did Not, As you say. ..." Suck Big Donkey Scrotum." .
Even though the core of the plot structure was the same-O' same-O'. The Unique twist/Idea of the building genetic bonding of the human DNA and brain function linked and used to host and motor an artificial alien body to. Was good story and new to me.
But Even that was not enough uniqueness as I was still expecting some big Clan of those Furry fucking little Star Wars ' Ewok', To jump out of the forest and start the Beat-Down on the Imperial Storm Troopers that were invading the forest. Because for the most part the main theme has been used to death as film entertainment. Avatar the artificial alien host run by evil big brother and used to rape mother earth and all life. All Life, tied to the never ending bond of life & death that moves in an infinite circle in connection. That animated story-line Purity that is destined to Win over the Evil Invading Suppressor. Is way Over used & fucking cliché in today's Hollywood Animation 'kiddy', Sci-Fi film Crap.
BUT still ! . If I was host to a cartoon alien body with access to floating pieces of mountains that are Hovering thousands of feet above a planet surface in a unstable magnetic Flux Field. And even though that cartoon planets did not have breathable air to keep me alive more that 4-minutes without breathing suppliement. I would probably still try to make a BASE jump there and Log it.

BASE Jumping Movie Critic
I had a column in a college newspaper for about a
year called "Video Ventures" and this year alone
I have done 121 BASE jumps & 17 new objects.

So here is my input:

Take Each Movie or Film For What IT Is

Meaning, I saw Open Water and was fucking
knocked out with how good it was for what it
was
, a low budget, short movie, shot on video.

7th Seal & Midnight Express, now those are films.

FYI - I own all three of the above titles and highly
recommend seeing each of them when possible!

So when I finally do see
Avatar I will expect $400
million dollars worth of eye candy but not a plot
with a complex narrative. Make sense guys?

Re: [GreenMachine] BASE Jumping Movie Critic
So what are you typing in Green is that you reviewed a lot of movies in collage and are recommending us all watch, Open Water, 7th Seal & Midnight Express. But you have not even seen AVATAR yet,? as that is what we are talking about & if it is like really making a Cartoon BASE Jump while wearing 3-D glasses.

Green,

IF you enter the theatre with an open mind, and no pre-judgement based on what you have heard about this film, I can guarrantee that you will enjoy it.

It is simply remarkable, in that James Cameron holds the U.S. Patent on this Digital 3D Software. He invented a new Digital 3D just for this film!

The reason why I posted this movie review on Basejumper.com, is that some scenes in the plot show the characters on the edges of cliffs, while riding Dinosaur Birds, and when they launch in 3D, it looks totally like a Base Jump with a Wingsuit!

If you enter the theatre with the intent to discover flaws or inaccuracies, you will only disappoint yourself. Rather, go into it looking forward to being entertained, and you will be.

This movie is deffinitely one of the best movies i have ever seen. I loved it. The scenes where they flew on the backs of those creatures were unreal. I kind of felt lucky that millions of people would only dream of doing stuff like that but wingsuiters know a bit of what it actually feels like. No way should u miss this movie thats for sure.

Ok... I just went to see this film again for the second time, in IMAX 3D, just to be sure that I was not over-rating it.

Paying close attention to detail, and waiting for the specific scenes that I referrenced previously, I can once again assure you, that this film will ROCK YOUR WORLD!

If you do not reach behind you looking for your Pilot Chute, then you are not paying attention!

Re: [base761] BASE Jumpers must see AVATAR 3D!
Lowcountrybase wants to see this movie for the first time...and dont worry because lowcountrybase will be muttering "pretend its a basejump, pretend its a basejump" throughout the whole movie. Lowcountrybase will surely agree that its going to feel like a basejump after lowcountrybase watches it in 3d at the Imax.

Hopefully lowcountrybase wont have to deploy his pilotchute because lowcountrybase wont actually be base jumping..rather just sitting in the imax theatre thinking lowcountrybase is on a basejump
Shortcut
Re: [lowcountryBase] BASE Jumpers must see AVATAR 3D!
Lowcountrybase should wear his BASE rig in the theater so that Lowcountrybase can make his virtual BASE jump more authentic. Just be sure to check for nut-unders. Virtual nut-unders are no laughing matter.
And be sure to swipe the 3D glasses on your way out. They make a real BASE jump more real.... you read that on the internet so you know it's true Wink

I liked it. And if you didn't think you were base jumping then you're dumb. It was exactly like base jumping and really cool and fun to be in such an exiting place with other people who you could turn around and look at all wearing funny glasses. ... that was a pretty good runon sentence... So if you want to experience pandora, all you need is a pet dragon or a parachute and a cliff. It feels the same. Exactly.

Edit: I did actually like it and would see it again on IMAX 3D for sure. I didn't care for some of the story but enjoyed the graphics quite a lot.

I loved the way Dream Walker Jake as a Na'vi synaptically connected to a flying Toruk grabbed hold of double rotor helicopters and tossed them into fiery crashes. Astounding demonstrations of biological entities defeating human exoskeletons (brought back memories from "Starship Troopers").

Saw it in Imax 3D this weekend. Two thumbs up. If you haven't seen it in Imax 3D, go find a theatre and do so immediately. It's well worth a couple hours drive and a $25 ticket, if that's what you have to do. I happened to be in a big city over the weekend, and caught it at a matinee for $9, but having done that I'd gladly drive a couple hours to an Imax theatre and pay more just to see it again.

Graphics were amazing, the not so hidden political and left wing messages were annoying at best. Evil corporations... wait a second, didn't James Cameron borrow $500 million from the evil corporations to make this flick? With that aside, this is the future of movie making. Truly stunning.

This is a fact! James Cameron stated in an interview, that he will ONLY make Digital 3D Films in the future! This is his technology that he invented for AVATAR, so be sure he will continue to use it for future projects.

I've been in theaters in developing countries where people have poor English skills. They don't get subtle plot developments.

They do understand Baywatch, Arnold films, and other eye candy. Basically, the lamest Hollywood stuff is the easiest to understand.

Thus the formula for a worldwide blockbuster tends to be a simple, familiar plot + stunning visuals.

It sounds like Sigourney Weaver made a friendlier version of Alien...

Fast & Furious is just Point Break, but
with cars instead of surfing and jumping.

FYI - wife and I are going to see the flick
in 30 minutes, after a safety meeting Wink

I saw Avatar yesterday in I-Max 3D. I though the movie was great, and the visuals were awesome. I kept waiting for the moment where it would resemble a BASE jump, but I didn't see it. The only thing in the movie that made me think of BASE was when the guy said something about feeling the wind and pushing against it.

As far as the story line being done before, how many movies can you name from the last ten years where that isn't the case.

Where were you during the scene where they were perched on the side of the gigantic cliffs on the backs of their dino birds? You must have been in the lobby getting popcorn when they launched?

Read the entire thread guys! 90% of everyone else agrees that it resembled a Base Jump! You few 10% who complain that they did not get it, really must have been asleep or in the Men's room taking a piss!

I guess the way you see it, is if it is not video from your helmet cam, then it is not an acceptable substitute? Avatar was just a movie. There were some scenes that "SIMULATE" Base Jumping. If you couldn't see it... then you missed out on the fun!

I was reaching behind my back, while in my seat!
