Radiation inside spinning wind turbines?
A quick search here didn't come up with any useful information so...

I heard a rumor that there was a jumper who got his hands on a radiation meter and was taking it up on towers and such. The rumor I heard was that there was a substantial amount of radiation near the generator when a big wind turbine is in operation. Anyone have more info on this? Thanks

I'm sure the folks at SkyVenture would be interested in your findings.

what kind of sensor?

I'll bet you a blackjack it is just EM radiation and there is not much to worry about there. it's only a big motor. and some spinning death disks of various sizes.

'radiation' is a terribly broad word.

Two words, Magnetic Flux. Can you say Cancer, Starility, The invisable mark of death. It's a fiendish trap that was set there just for us. Just like they run the power lines through low rent naiberhoods to steralize the the unwanted populus and spread cancer among the poor. The evil Chief Ranger is behind all of it. When he realized that he could never match our ninja skills he set this trap to try to lure us to our doom. Key, Evil Laugh.

I heard a rumour that due to high tension power lines, even the earth itself now has a magnetic flux. Also, that we've destroyed the atmosphere so much that some of the sun's electromagnetic radiation is making it to the surface. Scary times. Scary, scary times.

It's true, I lived in an apartment near those type of power lines and got cancer and lost an eyePirate, I don't have any BASE jumper "friends"Frown and I am sterile as a mule. I would be happy to prove that last point to any of you ladies out there...seriously

Re: [VTflyer] Radiation inside spinning wind turbines?
I now have 5 jumps off of spinning wind turbines and as far as the spinning things of death, they are really of no concern. While in the Nacelle (where all the spinning stuff is) There is enough room to not have to get near the spinning parts. while climbing out the door is close to the blades but again not a real issue. The exit point is off the back with plenty of room. If you have a 180 you are probably free falling it and then you are very close to being below the blades. The spinning blades also do not create turbulence because the blades are being forced to spin not spinning the air. The shaft (from prop-generator) that runs down the middle is spinning and you are close to it. However they are turning relatively slow (compared to like a PTO on a tractor or machine) and it is smooth so you are very unlikely to have an issue of getting wrapped in it. Its also large enough that you couldn't get wrapped in it. If you are talking cancer from EMR the concern is unfounded. The exposure is limited to minutes (not years like living under power lines) or even someone working at a power plant. The tourists that goes to Hoover damn gets more EMR. Refer to one or all of the following http://www.abc.net.au/...rpt/stories/s175.htm http://www.quackwatch.org/...latedTopics/emf.html http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/...d_health_issues?open If you would like to know more about EMR. that is simply not true

there have been various research studies done on wind turbines and one of the accepted and well known effects are turbulence created downwind of the turbine

Absolutely, whether or not the blades are pushing or being pushed, they are still disrupting airflow thus creating turbulence...

OK, I have done a little more homework and yes the turbines do have turbulence. I took the no turbulence theory from a forum that was on here some time ago http://www.basejumper.com/...%20turbines;#2765279 Sorry for my mistake. Even when the winds are strong the turbulence do not seem to be an issue. Did one Wed night and the winds were kicking.

the question has been answered already but i just got word back from a friend of mine that is a QA on the wind turbines and works around them for a living.

"is there any radiation about inside the turbines while they are on? "

"No they have permanent magnet generators, so there is friction heat radiation but not the type your referring to. "

just a big spinning weak MRI at worst. Told ya so. The word 'Radiation' terrifies the ignorant. Your hybrid car or garage door opener emit radiation too.
