Big canopies, small rigs
Anyone have experience fitting large canopies in comparatively small skydiving rigs?

I have a Mirage G3 M2 (it's a bit stretched out, and it'll readily take a 170 zp 9 cell). I'm thinking that it may be possible to fit a 220 in there, considering it would be 7 cell, F111, worn out and free packed with an excessively long closing loop.

So do I have a chance, any anecdotal evidence out there that such things are possible?

Thanks

do I have a chance

Yes.

Plus the rigging and packing involved with
hooking her up and trying is good practice.

dont forget the dacron lines are probably bigger than the vectran that you most likely have on the sabre 170 so that will increase your pack volume.

Incidently, I have a good answer to your question.

a friend has a Javelin J2 - the container is spec'ed out for a 150 ZP main. He has been packing a older Sabre-170 in there with no problem and no stretching. I have also packed a RavenII (218 sq ft F111) canopy in there with minimal problems (microlines). I have FREEPACKED a Flik 242 HTS in there for his balloon jump (BASE canopy - F111 with ZP foreskin (front 30% of the topskin leading edge is ZP) with dacron lines and lots more reinforcement than "regular" F111 main) - that was a bit tight, but did not look bad

So a 220 may work in the Mirage M2. Only one way to find out :)

why is it likely that his Saber170 has vectran ?

I am pretty sure Sabre1 canopies did not come with Vectran lines.
I know my Sabre2-120 has lines made of Spectra, but yes you are
correct Dacron lines are still thicker and hence take up more space.

FYI - Vectran are the really thin lines that swoopers put on really
small canopies for faster flight, down side is they do last as long,
and of course most Sabre-170 pilots are not going for speed.

HMA is what most pocket rockets use.

HMAs break, vectran stretches/shrinks.

but in the context of "really thin lines" - that would be HMA.

I can fit my Flick 242 into a small Vector-2-2 container. I got rid of the D-bag, made the closing loop about 6 inches longer and just free pack it into the container. Sometimes parts of the chute will be sticking out of the closing flaps, but what the hell. No problem. ;-)

I've freepacked my vented Fox 285 into my Talon 3 (sized for a 190) and my mate freepacked his Troll 245 into his Mirage G3 (sized for a 170). We used really long closing loops - it looked horrible but worked fine!

Don't have the pics here with me at work otherwise I'd post them.

That's pretty much exactly my situation.

I'll have to wait till next paycheck to find out by your method ;)

Thanks

just a generalized statement for what most sport canopies have on them now, there are the exceptions of course, but i just wanted to make the point that dacron lines are much thicker than than other types of lines.

weird. Most sport canopies I see have microlines.

Re: [shveddy] Big canopies, small rigs
I crammed a 240 in a container designed for a 190 and then watched my wife drag a pilot chute for 2000 feet until she decided to go to her reserve. Luckily, the final "Oh Shit, here goes" put her in a little bit of a sit and the pin popped and it deployed. At terminal, but what the hell, better than not at all.

After you put it on, have someone check the pin tension to make sure that pussy little skydiving PC will pull the pin.

very good point due. I just use an old skydiving 1 pin bridle (old in a sense that it's non-collapsible, so it's girthhitched on to the PC just like BASE stuff) and use a 32" ZP PC.

Re: [vid666] Big canopies, small rigs
I used a 32" ZP with external handle and BASE bridle with my 285 (packed in a container which holds a 190). No hesitation, that's for sure. Never had an insta-canopy like that before.

I'm not convinced the pilot cut power either.

Would probably be so excited the canopy fits I'd forget to consider that. Thanks.
