Re: [dan_inagap] Would jumping a crane attached to the side of a building count as your first B?
how a jumper labels an object depends on how they define objects. (and you will NOT find agreement between jumpers.)
the two major styles are:
1) how an object looks.
this is the camp that says, "ask a child, and then you know!" when they have difficulty categorizing an object, they label it an "O" for "other."
(personally, I'd say good luck finding someone who calls themselves a BASEO jumper...

)
and this is the equivalent of keeping track of blondes, brunettes, redheads, etc.
2) what experiences the object offers.
this group says how the flows creates unique hazards for the jumper. to label an object, the jumper must consider how the wind will affect them at opening altitude. this requires thought, and can mean 2 different jumpers can exit the same spot and effectively jump 2 different kind of objects! it makes for a messy system that many reject. (the wind acts differently for each of the 4 letters.)
and this is the equivalent of keeping track of timid, passive, angry, clingy, etc.
for the record, you can get your number using any classification system. Rick and Joy trust a jumper's opinion and will award you a number if you claim one.
the only referee that matters is your own conscious.
oh, and hang out here long enough and you'll see this come up again, and again, and again. people become very passionate. but it reminds me of the "what is the best canopy" question...
