My first B I had the option to go from the crane or the roof. I decided to avoid the asterisk, I would go from the roof.

In my opinion no, a crane is an O.

But whats cool about BASE is, its whatever you want to make it.

If I had a $ for every ....
'it wasnt technically a B because you jumped off the scaffold attached to the B'
'It wasnt a B because it was a Crane attached to the B'
'It wasnt a real BASE jump because it was a SL/ PCA/Unpacked jump'

Blah blah blah...

It really doesnt matter...does it ?
You know what you jumped off, log it however you want.

depends on the dangers inherent on the jump. if you jump from the horizontal boom well separated from the B, it is not a B.

There's nothing like standing with your toes hanging over the edge of a wall around a penthouse balcony.

If its a B, you'll know it.

Totally agree, the jump's about the jump, not the classification.

However... if you* are doing it for the letter, and getting the letters is important to you, then do it properly, as in don't have any doubt in your own mind about whether the object really is what you want it to be!

My first E was a McConkey off of an overlook platform, above a 240' underhung cliff. I asked several people, in person, if they thought it counted, and they all said yes and most said I was crazy for doing the jump, I still think it was relatively safe. That was my qualifying jump, but I have still not applied for my number. Not because I feel that it doesn't count, but because I am lazy when it comes to things like logging jumps or mailing a letter to get a number.

I'd bet that a lot of people who say on here that unpacked, pca, and sl jumps don't count as real BASE jumps still count all those jumps in there overall jump numbers.

If I jumped a crane that's attached to a building I gladly count it as my first O.

i dont see how jumping from a crane would be considered jumping from a building. If there was a crane beside an antenna and you jumped it would you consider that jumping from an antenna?

Re: [doinker] Would jumping a crane attached to the side of a building count as your first B?
I jump a crane attached to a building twice... We were so far from the building, so it was actually ''safer'' than many jump I've done! At least far from the object!

I haven't jump a "B" yet but once a will jump it, for sure it will be a real one!

As others have said - it's really up to you. It'll eat you up inside if you've qualified on a pseudo-B. My grand total of 5 B jumps were all from proper buildings, but were all either PCA or SL. I'm looking forward to my first freefall, but in the meantime I'm quite comfortable calling myself a BASE jumper.

It's all a matter of how strict (or completely anal) your definitions are. I know one jumper who only considers an antenna with guy wires to be a proper A! That would rule out my qualifying A.

Re: [dan_inagap] Would jumping a crane attached to the side of a building count as your first B?
how a jumper labels an object depends on how they define objects. (and you will NOT find agreement between jumpers.)

the two major styles are:
1) how an object looks.
this is the camp that says, "ask a child, and then you know!" when they have difficulty categorizing an object, they label it an "O" for "other."

(personally, I'd say good luck finding someone who calls themselves a BASEO jumper... Tongue)

and this is the equivalent of keeping track of blondes, brunettes, redheads, etc.

2) what experiences the object offers.
this group says how the flows creates unique hazards for the jumper. to label an object, the jumper must consider how the wind will affect them at opening altitude. this requires thought, and can mean 2 different jumpers can exit the same spot and effectively jump 2 different kind of objects! it makes for a messy system that many reject. (the wind acts differently for each of the 4 letters.)

and this is the equivalent of keeping track of timid, passive, angry, clingy, etc.

for the record, you can get your number using any classification system. Rick and Joy trust a jumper's opinion and will award you a number if you claim one.

the only referee that matters is your own conscious.

oh, and hang out here long enough and you'll see this come up again, and again, and again. people become very passionate. but it reminds me of the "what is the best canopy" question...

I would consider it more like an S but without the other extremity or support.Tongue
It is really hard to define certain objects
BTW, I made my first A yesterday (it was definitely an antenna)Laugh
