what do you weight?
What's your skydiving experience level?

Drop the words huck it,

Best answer. No the canopy is not a good first canopy.

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
so you are so not ready for a Heatwave 190 ...

You can most definitely survive using it, until you start doing panic turns low to the ground.

Suicide ? NO
Good Idea ? NO

May I suggest that if you decide to ignore all the advice you do all a favor and at least get video of your landings ? I have not seen much quality carnage lately. With BD around the corner and you possibly jumping the Heatwave 190, this may change... hoorah !

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
if you wanna go cheap like you obviously do, then get a sabre 190 if that's the size you're set on. Its cheap, its square, lots of people jump them, and while 190 may or may not be too small for you right now(I havent seen your landings so I dont know, but ASK YOU INSTRUCTORS WHAT TO GET), if that's the size you have your heart set on, then a sabre will be a much much better choice than a heatwave for you at this time.

I can 100% guarantee you that if you tell any instructor on your DZ that you don't even have an A license yet and this is the canopy you wanna jump they will slap you right in the face. For A LOT of DZ's, if you show up with an elliptical(no matter what size) and wanna jump, you either have 200+ jumps or they show you the door.

Don't be dumb, and post this Q on dorkzone next time.

My instructor is actually the one who offered to sell me his rig!(reserve&container $1100) They had two canopies laying around that they said would fit - A triathlon 160($650) and the Heatwave 190($400) They said I should do a few high hop n pops to get used to it, but I think I'm just going to wait and save up for a new accuracy rig(fury 220/wings).

well, youre from texas so nothing you say at this point would surprise me. Dont expect to be able to travel around to other DZ's with that rig, they probably wont let you jump an elliptical at your jump #'s.

I gotta clarify, that last post was by Spiderbaby (my husband), I had logged him out of our home computer.

As far as my opinion? If you have to ask an online forum AM I GONNA FEMUR?? Then yeah, you'll most likely femur in.

Not too cool.

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
190 isn't too small. The planform is what people are concerned about. You'll be 175 ish out the door, probably 180 so it's actually not bad. Flying and landing should be fairly straight forward, if the area is open.

If you downsize a bit slower than going straight to that heatwave, it shouldn't be bad. It's a big canopy but take few steps in between. GET REAL COACHING....It turns fast... really fast. A couple high hop n pops will certainly help. You need to land many times to figure out how to land though ;)

Landing on the dropzone is easy, landing in someones back yard next to the swingset ... avoiding powerlines, etc will get you if you don't know how to sink it in or do flat turns on any canopy. The heatwave may just do it quicker. Being a 190, who knows. I can find an incident report from a guy jumping 190 stiletto with low jump numbers, he actually had 100 I think. He weighed slightly more than you.

Parachutes.... FLying an accuracy rig is boring. Sorry but it is. You can learn all kinds of cool things on it if you're very creative. Back spins, flying backwards, sinking it in, but practicing skills under a different canopy then picking up something like a 170 would be a good bet.

You don't need a new rig either You can find something very suitable used. If you do get new, unless you get a really good deal get an Infinity. They're so much easier to rig as a packer of the main, and the reserve.

Go enjoy skydiving for what it is. Want to see a good video of great skydiving and a bit of base mixed in? I just saw this link yesterday. Tell me skydiving isn't fun after watching this. I don't know if you need a facebook account to see it, I think it's open ... here it is.

For $400.00 it probably needs a reline. you can send it to me and I can do that for you. It would then be as safe a bet for you as possible. You WILL NEED COACHING TO USE THIS PARACHUTE! You may need to put it aside for a bit to learn more. I don't know you or your instructors, so I can't say exactly what is appropriate for you. Ask your instructor, his instructor, his boss, ect.

"I can find an incident report from a guy jumping 190 stiletto with low jump numbers, he actually had 100 I think. He weighed slightly more than you."............................

If this is the incident I think your talking about, I was standing 50 ft. away and witness the entire thing. It was a Stiletto 190, yes the jumper has very low exp. for that canopy, and yes he is dead. Panic toggle turn 30 ft. from the ground to avoid powerlines.......you all can figure out the rest. Said jumper had NO IDEA how to fly that particular canopy.

To the captain: until you see a fatality it's hard to imagine it can/will actually happen to you. Dont be another static in the incident reports, downsize at a slower pace.

ps why the hell are we talking about this on a BASE fourm???

Re: [dride] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
That's the same one dride.

I also looked, he's in the middle of small town texas, surrounded by ... nothing.

Unless there's a real coach in the area, skip that parachute altogether. No offense intended, but a small dz in the middle of nowhere won't give a whole ton of instruction beyond altitude awareness and pull on time.

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
If you want the Heatwave, get it. Don't turn low. Always check the spot so you don't have to land off. If there are questionable winds don't jump, or at least don't jump until the spot is figured out. If you follow these rules and you somehow still manage to end up off DZ, remember that it is better to put it in deep brakes and land in trees than to hook a low turn.

Going with an elliptical for your first canopy is probably not the safest thing to do, but so fucking what?

Edit, that probably wasn't very nice. I'm including your skydiving profile to go along with the advice. It's not terrible, however it's not realistic.

Have a good weekend

Re: [hookitt] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
I have not updated that in a while. I actually have 253 jumps, a C license, and about three years. I know, that is still not much.

I agree that it's not realistic. I mostly made that post to stir the shit. I'm guessing themotherfuckingcaptain will make his decision based on the advice he wants to hear, not the best or most credible advice. I'd bet most, if not all, the people giving advice here have done things that were a lot more dangerous and outside their experience level than flying a Heatwave 190 at 1/1 for a first canopy.

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
As it seems that few think this is a solid first rig for skydiving, it seems like it really does not apply to BASE.

Moving it to The Hangout.

Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
That's a great choice of gear mate, and you can even use the Raven to BASE with. You can't hope for better value than that. Really you should buy your instructors a beer for looking out for you like that and giving you such a great deal.
Shortcut
Re: [themotherfuckingcaptain] Heatwave 190/ First Canopy/ Huck it?
It all depends of how good of a pilot you are. I have seen plenty of jumpers fly a 190 each around 20 jumps but none over 175lb's. Its better to jump longer than not be able to handle downsizing. I would test it first and see how it feels but be prepared to plf
