Re: [wwarped] new to jumping... where do i start?
/EDIT: Like most posts that are split off from where they were originally posted, this one seems about half-ass stupid sitting here by itself out of context. I won't delete it, but I certainly wouldn't have started a thread to say so little. /EDIT

I know when I join many boards I get a welcome email, some even an email to confirm the account. I may have when I joined DZ before this board split off. Is there any way to send a confirmation email or welcome email that tells people to read the FAQ before posting? Or to prevent posting for 30 days like the limitation in the classifieds?

Not directed at the OP in this thread, but maybe it would keep out some of the clutter. I suspect we will have some new visitors after Sunday's 60 minutes piece (most asking where to buy a flying squirrel suit.) Cool

I like your idea, but have no way of implementing it.

instead, I separated it into this forum. maybe someone smarter than I can chime in?

I think a newbe forum will do the trick?!

I think that would help. Call it "Want to learn to BASE Jump?" or something equally attractive to a whuffo looking to kill themselves. "Newbies start here" or won't really stick out enough.

Then right at the top of that forum I'd have a bright, red sticky post titled, "Learning to BASE Jump - Start Here!" with the standard information we dish out to the "i wanna base jump" posts.

Thoughts?

the problem is getting people to read.

at one time, there was a prominent "Before you Post" link. it didn't help much.

for that matter, I still doubt most users have read the page or two of "The Rules."
Unsure

the welcome message would still be ignored, but it seems like a better approach.

"Learn to BASE Jump - Start Here!" is much more of an attention grabber than "Before you Post". Nearly every forum has a "Before you Post" or "Read this first" - but this doesn't tell people what the thread is going to be about and people will just think it's the standard rules and blah, blah blah.... people tune out.

For those people wanting to start BASE I would say the majority will read a "Learn to BASE Jump - Start Here!" type post first - if they see it.

If people do come due to the 60 min piece what would be the problem , folk who only have a fad will drift off into nothingness and their fad with BASE will be over , even if just 1 person who saw whatever piece your talking about gets inspired to take up the sport that has to be a good thing ! am i wrong ?

Well why dont they add a thing that when someone first joins the bj.com site they automatically get sent to the first few pages where they read learn to jump,

or a section they must read the threads and then they can be introduced to all the other forum threads..

i have seen this on other sites that until you read a certain amount of threads you cant get into the major forum..

idea hey?
