POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
I'm not coming back on this website until the ridiculuous subaru mud stain pop-up ads are taken off. it makes me want to punch things. like the outback that's parked in front of my office.

I finally started using Ad-Block Plus for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/...S/firefox/addon/1865

I don't see any ads, and everything seems to work faster.

Looks like you beat me to this post. It pops up EVERY time I go to a new page.

Re: [vid666] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
agreed.

if someone wants to pro-actively take some control over their web experience (using Firefox), I'd also recommend Flashblock.

why blindly let a developer dictate what you see? you might not agree on what is "cool," or feel generous with your bandwidth.

we should all start emailing the Subaru advertising department pictures of our own mud stains.

If you use Internet Explorer Adblock IE works well.

I just installed it because of the mud ads. Damn that's completely out of line.

I completely agree; this is why I don't frequent websites that allow this type of intrusive advertising...

it seems silly to avoid sites when I can control the problem. it is especially silly for me as I must visit some otherwise annoying sites for work.

ps
plus, I never know how annoying a website will be until the first visit. now, no worries.

Re: [wwarped] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
Use AdBlock, not FlashBlock.

Block only the ads. Lots of very useful content out there uses Flash, such as videos, photo galleries, online forms, and other very useful things that aren't easily or safely done without Flash.

Don't get down on the web developers, it's the ad designers and the agencies that accept their bullshit ads that are to blame! Blush

(Yes, Wwarped, I know you disagree. That's just my web developer 2 cent opinion)

Oh, and Flash doesn't necessarily take any more bandwidth than the usual website. It just tends to load completely up-front. Either that, or it uses lots very high-res graphics to make it look purty or to display high-quality photos to its viewers (which is very important for many types of businesses). Or the developer sucks and didn't optimize for jack shit.

Re: [Ghetto] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
the cool thing about Flashblock is that it replaces the Flash with an icon. if you wish to watch the video, just click on it. select and choose the animation you want. (it fails to permanently block any Flash.)

mr. Ghetto is right, it will virtually prevent users from viewing some sites.

but it's great for visiting porn sites...

We're working on getting these ads taken down. I haven't seen them in a few minutes, but I'm not sure if that's a coincidence or not.

I'll keep updating this thread when I know more.

Re: [TomAiello] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
thanks, i have not seen one since this morning.
i'm sure advertisements are a big part of why we're able to have this wonderful land-of-internet-BASE-make-believe, and i hope they continue to pay money to be a part of awesomeness the likes of base75's posts, but no reason for the sponsors to jamb shit down our throats. Although, i did visit the subaru webpage to look for someone in their advertising department at whom to direct a strongly worded letter, so it kinda worked for product awaremess, in a way.
But i'd just as soon throw mud on the next subaru i see as think about buying one.

Re: [kcollier] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
No, they're still there. I'm using a laptop right now with no ad block of any kind on both IE and Firefox.

I have to wait it out or close it to post. I'd say for attention grabbing, it gets an A+

I would still think it was a detergent ad if it wasn't mentioned in earlier post so for that, I give it a D.

Edit: I take that back, the ad doesn't pop up every time but it's not gone completely.

See this announcement posted in the General forum:

In reply to:
Hi everyone,

Yesterday and last night we discussed the Subaru advertising campaign with NameMedia, the owner of Dropzone.com. (You may recall that NameMedia's involvement with the site is to sell and serve ads. All management and operational responsibilities are delegated D4DR Media, the previous owners of the site).

NameMedia sold this campaign to Subaru without our knowledge or involvement. The campaign started running yesterday, and entails rich media effects across the browser screen. Our position has always been that we strongly oppose any kind of invasive advertising like pop-ups, page take-overs or interstitials, hence we urged NameMedia to remove the ads. They have the final call however and decided to keep the campaign running, tweaking the implementation to ensure that a particular user will not see more than 3 of the ads each day. Further:

- The campaign will end on Oct 17th
- There is an “x” box during the rich media extension that allows the user to stop the rich media.
- The campaign is targeted for US users only.

You are encouraged to send your feedback and views about the campaign to NameMedia at advertise@dropzone.com.

As noted in a few places, Firefox has an extension that appears to effectively block this ad.

I amend this statement to read, we should all start emailing the NameMedia advertising department pictures of said mud stains. I drank beer last night, and had an egg sandwich this morning, so i'll have some great content to distribute in about an hour.

Re: [GooManChew] POP-UP Ads - Mountain Mud Stains
Unfortunately the Help > Check for Updates only updates your Firefox to minor revisions (eg. 3.0.1 -> 3.0.2), not major revisions (eg. 3.0.x -> 3.5).

Not sure why they do that.
