Sammy Sellout is a pip! You get his charm and enthusiasm right off the bat. While some disparage Red Bull's corporate effect on BASE jumping, these are the guys moving the sport into the next century. And he even gave me an honorary Red Bull Goofball Helmet. He's so cute. I hope I can get through this interview without creaming in my drawers . . .

1- TLN - When did you start BASE jumping?

SS - I fell off my skateboard a month ago and while I was home recuperating I saw BASE jumping on Youtube. I thought it was rad!

2- TLN - How did you train for your first jump?

SS - I didn't. I just went for it. I knew my mad skateboard skills would suffice, it's pretty much the same thing after all.

3- TLN - How did BASE change you life?

SS - Well, before BASE I was a fucking nobody. Now I'm a hero!

4- TLN - What do you say to those who feel you are selling out the sport Carl Boenish died for?

SS - Who the fuck is Carl Boenish?

5 - TLN - Are you going to Bridge Day this year?

SS - Naw, I don't hang with un-sponsored, non-professional jumpers. Those are the guys who are giving BASE a bad name.

6- TLN - Do you have a BASE number?

SS - No, those are for retards.

7 - TLN -How do you feel about the recent controversy concerning the removal of a few trees at La Mousse?

SS - I feel that anything that's good for Red Bull is good for BASE jumping.

8 - TLN - What type of edge do you prefer on your axe? Bevel or concave?

SS - I like the bevel, I find it gives me more power on the down stroke.

9 - TLN - Where do you see the sport of BASE jumping in ten years?

SS - I think only corporately licensed professionals like me will be allowed to BASE jump. We need to get rid of the undercover middle of the night amateur BASE jumping that's currently going on.

10- TLN - What's the difference between an amateur and a professional BASE jumper?

SS - Free gear. Plus you get paid, baby!

11 - TLN - Tell me something surprising about the Red Bull Air Force?

SS. Well, not a lot of people know this. But Red Bull's very first sponsored BASE jumper was Gerald, BASE 75. We all really look up to him. In fact, when we try to take over the USPA again we're putting him up for Executive Director.

12 - TLN - What the USPA? Oh, never mind. There's been a few high profile accidents involving the Red Bull Air Force lately. How do you feel about that?

SS - Yes, we set the bar pretty high in the Red Bull Air Force. And if you can't hack it at this level you just get discharged.

13 - TLN - That may sound cold to some people? I can't belive you'd feel that way about Shane and Eli?

SS - Who the fuck is Shane and Eli?

14 - How does your family feel about what you do?

SS - My dad, who just turned thirty, thinks it's the bomb. My Mom worries a bit, but you know. What the fuck do woman know.

15 - Anything you want to add before we end this?

SS - Definitely! Drink more Red Bull!

I'm as disappointed as anyone that the Red Bull guys remodeled La Mouse, but demonizing them doesn't help anything. Cutting down trees doesn't make someone a heartless, womanizing, baby-eating rapist. It simply shows a lack of consideration, and that is more than enough to deal with on its own.

I was trying to show RB doesn't give a flying fuck for anybody or anything except selling more swill.

I only met Shane a few times, but I knew Eli pretty well. I met him when he first came to Perris in the early 90s. And I watched in awe as he grew as a free flyer. And I didn't mean disrespect to either. But If that's the way it was taken, I fucked it up.

Guys, I think some of you aren't reading between the lines.
Yes, some of the jokes are very harsh, acrid, and sarcastic!
But you know Nick was/is sad about Eli and Shane passing.
The disrespectful statements are meant to be attributed to a
very young skateboarder who hucks only for money & fame.

I knew shane and eli, they'd have laughed but I still think you should have just used your name.

Sackrider? Not at all. However I was pretty good friends with Shane, hung out and jumped with him quite a bit. Also listened to what he had to say about Red Bull. That crew is able to do some really cool things because of the budget they have. Some think they burn sites when they do their demos. A few years ago they did a massive building tour in Reno. People still jump there without a problem. Last year I was able to jump a building for a night club in Reno. People still jump in Reno no worries. I feel like alot of jealosy turns into hate for the lucky few who have the opportunity to make money doing something they love. Nick, I hope you are not jealous because they jumped a building in SD that may have been "your building".

Do I agree with them cutting down those trees? No I think that was a bad move just for a few shots. But will most of you still watch the movie? Probably.

I saw Nicks post as disrespect towards Shane and Eli and their families. By making up a fake interview parody of a red bull athlete shows that you feel that Shane (and Eli) were a bunch of idiots, just like the athlete you created above.

In light of my post I hear you. But, after doing the BFL for over twenty years and dealing with more dead BASE jumper's families than possibly anyone, I can't tell you how wrong you are. I could post more than a few of their e-mails to me that would have us all crying our eyes out.

It's one of the reasons I stopped doing the list. I couldn't take it anymore.
