The thing that is buggin me though is that this thread has been attracting more sympathy and "money sent" posts than that
other thread about an 18yr old kid who's paralyzed and without health insurance after an accident involving a BASE rig and a ground launch.
ok. just had to say it. Flame away.
not a flame, more of an observation.
while neither of the two situations is BASE related, we should learn from BASE. our hobby has very harsh realities. we need to recognize them, plan for them, and prepare for the worse.
we also need to accept responsibility for our actions. when I screw up, I should not
expect you to help. it is my f*ck up, not yours.
I'm regularly disappointed by people who refuse to contact locals, refuse to buy landing cards, refuse to listen to advice, refuse to get health insurance, etc. in short, they get tunnel vision on their needs and fail to consider their impact on others.
both of the stories seeking sympathy and assistance involved someone being human and making mistakes.
Avery at least has a long history of helping others, providing assistance, etc. he has banked a tremendous amount of goodwill. he now needs to make a withdrawl. (his problems also do not involve a parachute.)
the other unfortunate person? unfortunately, he will touch more people after his accident than before. his story will feed into the fear of parachute activities. before he had a real chance to help the community, his choices may hurt it.
p.s.
is it fair?
probably not.
I think the paralyzed soldiers returning from battle deserve the most sympathy. they don't always get it either...
