Vented pilot chutes are overrated. I've cut all the way down one side of each sector in my pilot chutes. As soon as it loads up, the PC starts spinning like a pinwheel. It's all about gyroscopic stabilization. If you care about safety, you'll do the same.

Also, make sure you use slow colours, or you'll get PC hesitations. A lot of jumpers use fast colours, under the false impression that that'll lead to a fast deployment by the PC, but remember -- the pilot chute is an anchor, and must go slow.

Ive gotten oscillation with my vented 42. The vents seem to reduce it but I dont think it gets rid of it completely.

Like Jason was saying,
what color was the PC?

the vents dont sit in the right place to make a difference. The only pilot chute with proper vents is the toxic one from asylum. Hooking your pilot chute up properly is more important

ARE YOU JOKING ?

DO YOU MEAN YOU BELIEVE THERE ARE SLOW AND FAST FABRICS, DEPENDING ON THE COLOUR ?

Seriously, I think that in the vast majority of cases, a vented pilot chute is to safety in BASE what unplugging your cell phone charger is to saving the environment. Which is to say, it's probably not a bad idea, but for most jumpers (myself included) there are many places to spend the same money that'll give you more safety for your dollar, even if they're less sexy. Heck, I could make a pretty long list of things that are completely free that would improve my safety more than a new pilot chute.

Re: [epibase] Spinning ? Ossilating Pilots Chutes
epibase,
Here are the differences between the two different Toxic models, as I understand them:

1. The series 7 model places the vent further from the apex of the PC. You'll notice the vent is narrower than on the series 6, but because the vent is further from the apex, the radius of the curve is greater. Therefore, the length of the apex is longer, which probably balances out the overall surface area contributed to venting.

2. The series 7 model can be ordered with a F-111 center section, as an option.

Aerodynamically, I am not qualified to speak to the effect(s) of moving the vent further from the apex, though I have my guesses.

Cheers,

topher
