Kandersteg and other jumps outside the valley

We had another big accident at Kandersteg with a helicopter rescue 2 weeks ago.

The local authorities have “asked” us not to jump there anymore. This is the Swiss way to let us know that under no circumstances jumping should take place there if we do not want any legal consequences. As the BASE situation in Switzerland is not at its best, we have to avoid any unnecessary attention.

Please do not jump there anymore for at least this year. There are more than enough beautiful jumps in the valley. We will check the situation again beginning of next season to see if we can jump there again.

Regarding all the other Swiss jumps outside the valley (except of course the Mushroom), please also only jump these jumps with a local. Do not go there on your own, even if you know the exit. Many of the jumps are kind of half legal and the locals know if the jumps are hot or not. Also this will help us to keep unnecessary attention away.

About the SBA Landing card:
I would assume that only around 20% buy the landing card. I cannot understand this!!! It only costs CHF 20.--! That’s USD 18.-- and EUR 13.--

Are so many of you guys too cheap to pay this tiny amount?? That’s about 4 beers in the Horner. It really helps us with the farmers which are the main objectors of BASE jumping in the valley. And the farmers are the ones who can stop jumping in LB.
If you cannot afford the CHF 20.--please send me an email on michibase@hotmail.com, I will try to see if I can ask other jumpers to chip in for you.
Or maybe it is too complicated to register on http://www.basejumper.ch...
But honestly, I am not the brightest light on earth and even for me it is not a problem going online and filling out the form. You can do this before coming to LB and then pay the CHF 20.-- to the girls at the Horner or at the tourism bureau.
The SBA is really putting a lot of work into trying to keep BASE jumping in LB allowed and as save as possible. Please help us by contributing the CHF 20.-- THANK YOU

Michi, SBA

About the SBA Landing card:

I find this incredible, 1 out of 5 jumpers pay for the landing card??? What the hell is wrong with people? Or is the info not getting through to everyone? Maybe put another sign up top by the exits or advertise it in the pub more visibly or something?

Maybe there should be a donation box in the Horner, so we can all finance the landing cards of these ungrateful dipshits. it isn't fair to the jumpers who paid for theirs, but hey life isn't either.

i jumped in the valley in early may this year.
i did not have a card.
however, i did not know it existed.
i did have insurance with IHIbupa, that would cover any issues abroad.

i think switzerland is quite possibly the most beautiful country in the world, not to mention the true land of the free.

I proud that I can say that every f***ing Finn who Jump in the Valley have that landing card, 100% Smile

20 CHF is really cheap way to respect the local farmers !!!

I'm happy you enjoyed your time in Switzerland.

How did you research your trip?
Did you read this?
if so, did you miss post #12 (the card dates from early last year)?

I mean how can we ensure others will know the minimum for all these sites? There is valuable information that we WANT jumpers to know!

damn fine point!

I meant to link it to the sticky thread that discusses Jumping Site Guidelines.

Fail, if you like.
or you can say I need more practice with my cut-n-paste skills! Tongue

I hope it's correct now and we can return to the proper discussion.

<sigh>
it's not about this site, it's about respecting the locals and their site. it's about being polite and considerate.

Swiss jumpers are working to keep the valley open, for the benefit of all. they have gone out of their way to post information here. management has agreed to make it as available as possible.

in other words, the Swiss are trying to reach out to YOU.

so, how did you research your trip?
how did you choose to be polite and respect local wishes?
where can the Swiss add this information to make it even MORE available to jumpers?

do you not want to keep the valley open?

the point i am making is that not everyone who goes to the valley is on bj.com all the time.

i had no idea the card exisited.
nor did i hear about it from anyone at the horner, or on any exit point.

have a nice day.

Re: [avenfoto] Important notice: Landingcard, Kandersteg and other jumps in Switzerland outside the valley

u know. the first time I went to the Valley I just flew to Zurich with my rig and got on a train towards Lauterbrunnen. I did not at the time surf BJ.com very often and I was ignorant enough to not even know about the Horner Pub. I stayed at the campground down the street and figured the place out on my own (i don't quite have the attention span for doing much research when I travel). It was early season and not many people were around other than a few Frechies. I was mostly broke so I would hang at the campground eating bread and cheese and never went out to eat or drink at the Horner. It wasn't until I was there for about 5 days that my Swiss friend finally made it up to show me around and the first thing he asked about was the landing card which I promptly purchased. I can't remember if those signs at the exit points mention the the card or not.

Yes, I am a stupid American, what can I say.

I'm not making an excuse for my actions I am just saying that it is possible to go over there and not know any better, especially BASE Jumpers. We all need to work to educate other jumpers and to get the point across on the importance of the card and the valley.

It would suck to lose that Magical place!

thanks to you and avenfoto for the stories. it's the sort of feedback that can help improve the situation.

hopefully, the OP will see them so they can find a way to get the word out.

Re: [Mikki_ZH] Important notice: Landingcard, Kandersteg and other jumps in Switzerland outside the valley
...there is another issue too... this year I have met a bunch of jumpers without a mobile phone and asked myself (as well as them) how they could call Air Glacier prior to their jump to be informed...no acceptable feedback to this question as one may imagine...therefore I would also strongly recommend to accept this rule as well...it is for ones own security as well as to full helicopter crew and their passengers...

Hey Michi,
BTW: I have like this quote from you and can definitely agree: "...But honestly, I am not the brightest light on earth ..."

:-)))))) ...and hope to see you soon, Bernhard

Just a hint...
Prepaid mobile phones can be bought at the post office near the cable car station for something between 30-40 sFr.
The already come with some credit.
Pretty good deal imho.

from another thread:

Mikki_ZH wrote:
We realized that some jumpers have not been aware that we have a landing card and missed to pay the CHF 20.--

The information regarding the landing card can be found here:
http://www.basejumper.ch/

For those jumpers who missed to pay for the card when they where in Lauterbrunnen I opened a paypal account:

sba_member@hotmail.com

As most of you already know, the big part of this money (last year about 3/4th) is used to pay the local farmers who own the landing areas and about 1/4th is used for infrastructure, such as windsocks and so on.

Thanks for your support,

Michi SBA
