don't know if this helps but http://www.summitpost.com has some detailed topo maps for certain areas. it's hit or miss though. Sometimes I get lucky on there.

If you have google earth, there is a free download that provides USGS quad maps (tiff files). 40-ft contour interval, so not super detailed but it's FREE.

You can download USGS quadrangles from the USGS directly:

You can get the 7.5m quads, the 15m quads, as well as some other miscellaneous topo maps.
