26ft-lo po rounds...
i just traded an old timer at my dz a 12-pack of corona for an old skyjumping rig

its some kind of srtong piggyback system mfg 1980 with a 26ft lopo round for a reserve and a unit 7cell main.

i intend to set the main on fire under canopy, and dont really have a use for the harness, but i was wondering about the reserve.

how do i pack it? how can i basejump it? was thinking about doing it at bd... is this just a bad idea overall? thanks

There is a guy in TF that has been jumping a 26' lopo packed and unpacked, and landing in the river. You should have it checked by a rigger including a pull test and mesh-acid test.

will do, the data card says it passed inspection and was repacked as recently as may 15 09, and dom 1970

you should have the pull (or the thumb :) test done. pH test is more of a formality on Strongs, as none of them ever used the mesh from the recall. Also, the acid mesh came out in the 80's so a 1970 canopy should not be affected.

packing rounds is really simple. Just need looooooong space and 2 good anchors. here's BR manual http://www.apexbase.com/...-26_H2O%20Canopy.pdf
I pack in the hallways of BD, and just ask people standing around to be my anchors. Most important part is leaving the channel at the bottom of the canopy open. Otherwise "it's a round, you are going in the water anyways".

I don't 45 the skirt, and I don't use the diaper at BD, though one could, especially if they don't have the stows in the backpad of their rig.

It wasn't a strong starlite container was it? I did all my student jumps on those damn things. Might look at closeing off the apex hole. You might try putting a tail gate style band around the canopy bellow the upper latteral band to help with the low speed openings.
You might also finger trap loops in a couple of the apex lines alla perserve canopies.

Bryan, please save me the harness!
I will deduct some money for it.

I have a "round packing for BASE" video that I can send you (mail me a SASE). I have jumped a 26' lopo at many locations, including BD. It's a fun ride, especially when you're headed for the rocks and your forward speed is that of a turtle.

You'll likely have to modify your base rig as well (rubber bands for line stowage in backpad of container).

Re: [avenfoto] 26ft-lo po rounds...
I have heard that....

Closing off the apex with a couple of rubber bands (about 1.5 to 2 feet down from the top) speeds up the initial inflation by making the overall volume smaller. 26' is quite large and takes some time to fill. The rubber bands pop off on opening. It also helps minimise air loss thru the apex during initial inflation.

i regard closing off the apex with a rubber band a couple feet down to be absolutely essential on base jumps (with rounds). It has a dramatic effect in increasing the opening speed. Even with the apex rubber banded, a 26 footer will take a long time to open compared to a square. it's kind of freaky experiencing it. i prefer a pioneer k-20 or a super-22 due to their smaller size. The pioneer k series were the ones that were identified as having the acid mesh problem, so be aware of this. you can pick up one of these canopies for about $100 unused. My k-20 has a 12 mph forward speed too.

I jumped a 26ft-lo po round from 600ft, it did kinda snivel and 180. KAM jumped it at Terminal from #7. it did okay.
I am not so sure that rubberbanding the apex works how one thinks although it may work.
Drag of the extended deployed canopy creates a low pressure area in the upper part of the canopy and then starts moving down to the skirt. Not the other way around.
Take care,

I agree with setting fire to the Unit. I had one years ago that snivelled so bad I had to cut a hole in the slider the size of a dinner plate. When it did open it had an inbuilt turn which required about 25cm of toggle input to keep it flying straight. BURN, BURN, BURN!!!!!

yes, the canopy opens from the top down. There are some photos I put on this website showing this. It's in the E section.

closeing off the apex can speed that process of filling the top of the canopy. example, the Buttler canopies that have a very large apex hole sized for high speed openings. They tie the apex closed about 2/3 of the way down the lines with 80# break cord. Low speed opens faster, high speed breaks the cord and fully opens the apex.

what would be the lowest safe heights to SL and FF a 26 footer over dirt?
