Re: [SabreDave] 186 feet without a rig..........
tons of interesting quotes, simular to what we may experiance....

In reply to:
'Then an acceleration, speed, and impact unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. I wasn’t sure if I was hurt or not. My body was just in shock.'

In reply to:
Bradt said he wanted to attempt the plunge not to set a record but to show what humans are capable of achieving.
The motivating factor for all this was just that I thought it was possible. I wanted to do it, I guess, because I can.
'It was a calculated risk, no doubt dangerous but also one of the most amazing days of my life.
'It’s a personal thing and nothing exterior, especially negativity, affects that.'

Bradt has faced criticism that his stunt will encourage others to try the extreme sport of kayak free-falling.
But he dismissed the suggestions, saying: 'I hope it encourages people not to run huge waterfalls but to understand that the only limits that exist are the ones you create, no matter what you are doing.'

Re: [yeyo] 186 feet without a rig..........
i mean, honestly, that is amazing what he did. I would never have the athleticism nor balls nor whatever to even contemplate that.

With that said, I'd have to say that was a pure 50/50 shot, and if he didnt make it, that would be prime candidacy for a darwin award.

20ft was the biggest waterfall I have ever done and it was both un-nerving and thrilling, I would never do a drop that tall. I know to many boaters with broken backs.

Sweet. "Touched speeds of 100mph", though? Was his kayak equipped with rockets? Freefall from 186 feet puts you at 75 mph...

Re: [base736] 186 feet without a rig..........
Ha ha, maybe the H2O was running at 25 MPH?

It'd have to be going at 65 mph initially for the speed at the bottom to have been 100 mph (since rivers flow more-or-less horizontally, and the falls would pick up its vertical speed from, well, falling).

You sound like a whuffo. If you didn't BASE, your post would seem more logical. I will show you a little trick called "Applying Logic Across the Board.".
Someone jumped from X object with only one parachute. I'd have to say that was a pure 50/50 shot, and if he didnt make it, that would be prime candidacy for a darwin award.
Just my thoughts on your post.

haha...umm...if you made a base jump with 50/50 odds...wouldnt that mean someone was going in every other jump?

thats called 'logic across the board'

thanks though Cool

Um no, We are dealing with the individual. Also one can factor in whuffo style of parachute opens or not. We as a group probably deserve the Darwin award more than any group except for those who do more extreme things Wink

As in joking with a tandem passenger,
I give us chances of about 50-50...
we will either make it or we won't.

Who is daft here. At least with a tandem you got a reserve.
Whuffo view is 50% that it will open blablabla. Guess what the other 50% entails. Do I actually have to write it out?
Take care, sorry I did not state the obvious. I thought you guys were in the club.

Nope, not daft AND I totally understand statistics
given that I have a Master's Degree in Economics,
I think I still explained what you were getting at
which as in the eyes of an ignorant ANY jump is
a 50-50 thing..... but I got what you mean and
yes the reserve helps to up one's chances.
