Re: [RayLosli] Want to buy a mountain?
Sorry about that, made the mistake of throwing it out there and not giving an opinion.
Essentially I am against the sale of the mountain.
Thing is, it is already privately owned. Some of the poor guys who live in that village were already displaced during the apartheid era; the rasta's are mostly subsistence fisherman/poachers. These guys live hand to mouth when about a mile from there, a person has already spent R54 000 000 on his house that is not yet finished. Suddenly Estate Agents are finding value to the land and finding problems with the people who were displaced there. The whole thing is a little bigger than just the sale of a mountain. There is an apartheid legacy of sorts. The struggle turned to violence when the oppressed realized that there was no other way they could be heard. Come 2009 it's not the skin colour but the social status and nothing has really changed for these guys. I don't agree with the violence at all but with lack of education it's the only way some think they have of being heard.
I have done 115 jumps off that cliff alone. The cliff is about 25 mn from my house and I live in a fully developed urban area; incidently I am nearby the area from which some of these people were displaced in the first place. On that mountain I have seen Lynx, Puffadder, Cobra, etc... It's just a beautiful piece of land.
I think it should become reserve.
But hey, I am just a BASE jumper who wears Hanwags and smokes pot all day.
