Apparently hang gliding is allowed on a trial basis in Yosemite with limitations. BASE and paragliding are not allowed. Hopefully the NPS is on it's way to easing the current unreasonable restrictions against gravity-powered airsports.

Edited to add that I just found out that this has been going on for the last 20 years. I didn't realise that BASE and paraglide had been banned while hang gliding, even though in limited form, was allowed. Truly incredible.

OW! I live on an island, what year is it? Just started paragliding, the latest USHPA mag has an article inviting hang gliders to fly at Yosemite. BASE and paraglide not welcome. I never knew that hang gliding was so special.

it is so far beyond my ability to comprehend how that activity is legal, and base is not.

Re: [kcollier] Yosemite
i couldn't watch the entire video, all that screaming at the exit point was making my head hurt. seemed pretty disruptive to the natural environment and should probably be banned in the national parks, just think how quite they'd be if they had to sneak off the cliff... : P

The article is in a magazine, there apparently isn't an online version. Here's a link to another USHPA article.

Don't catch your foot in the sleeping bag and trip during launch. Oh man.

I had it explained to me once. evidently, they can only launch from one point. this special place is outside the designated "Wilderness" area. that designation creates one of several legal defenses against jumping.

t seems like the stewards of the land created a layered legal defense. it is what happens when the rangers spend decades chasing down jumpers. Unsure

Re: [wwarped] Yosemite
Actually BASE predates hang gliding in Yosemite. When Mike and Bryan jumped El Cap in 1966 hang gliding (in modern form) was still some years away.

I remember the first modern hang gliding I ever saw was in Hawaii in about 1973 off the Molokai cliffs of Oahu.

I suppose they were doing it in So Cal at about the same time.

BASE - the original aerial sport in Nat Parks . . .

I heard that BASE is totally legal in all National Parks now. Really. It was on the news. Everybody go jump. Right now.

The only rule is that you can't act as gay as those Hang Glider people. whoohoo . Tongue
