2 men sentenced for GC BASE Jumo

In reply to:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—Two California men have been fined for an illegal 2007 parachute jump in the G**** C*****.
A federal magistrate in Flagstaff sentenced 30-year-old Christopher Copeland McNamara of Marin County to a year's probation and a $5,000 fine for the illicit BASE jump on Wednesday. BASE jumpers hurl themselves off buildings, antennas, cliffs or bridges and quickly deploy their parachutes.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says McNamara pleaded guilty to making the jump and will be banned from national parks while on probation. The ban doesn't apply to Yosemite National Park, where McNamara does volunteer work.

Corey Jonathon Rich of South Lake Tahoe pleaded guilty to violating terms of his commercial filming permit by not reporting the illegal jump. The charge against the 33-year-old Rich will be dismissed in a year if he pays $1,000, works to denounce BASE jumping and fulfills other requirements.

Work to denounce BASE jumping? WTF?

This is retarded beyond belief, it seems the law enforcement has nothing better to do, but catch and sentence highly dangerous law breaking base jumpers!

Yeah and the denounce part... Pirate

Fuck the police.

I would really like to hear more details from Chris on this one. Did the "denounce BASE jumping" bonehead statement come from the judge or NPS? I've heard some crazy stuff in my time, but this one tops them all.

Events like this will eventually force jumpers to band together, stronger than before, and take a stand against the idiocy of NPS policies.

All I can say Freedom is everything. Nothing belongs to anybody, and nobody can take away your trough spirit. Fight your rights.

Im really upset when for no reason they can make ban on jumping a perfectly cliff, where they will do no harm to anybody, except in the periods they will disturb the wild life!

When I was a kid watching Carl´s movies jumping from El Cap and Half Dome, I lived in the moment trough his films!

2007? Did these charges come about because of some video or did they get busted in 07 and the case just finished?

I think the case has been ongoing and the sentencing just got handed down.

Re: [freefly_trumpet_guy] 2 men sentenced for GC BASE Jumo
my understanding is the charges originated because the jumps were in a major film, as part of the reel rock climbing/adventure film tour. one jump can be seen in the following trailer at about 1:35 here http://www.reelrocktour.com/2008_site/index.php

But I don't know if that is how the NPS found out about it or not. I assume so since they charged the cameraman too, for the ridiculous charge of "not reporting the incident"? Maybe Chris will chime in and fill in the details?

"In a prepared statement, Park Superintendent Steve Martin said, "BASE jumping is inherently dangerous; but that's only part of why it's prohibited in the park. BASE jumping here, where the terrain is so intensely rugged and the nearest help can be hours away, increases the inherent risks exponentially, and it puts park rescue personnel resources at risk."

Unbeleivevable! The reasoning and the charges and are ridiculous and ludicrous beyond belief.

Whereas, climbing in the exact same area (which is allowed) does not share the exact same inherent risks?

while talking to a reporter, the rangers can spin it any way they want. or the reporter can mis-quote. the sadest part is that the public rarely questions the "logic."

nothing requires the authorities to properly justify the policy.

Exactly. I'm lucky enough to be living in Switzerland, but even so, I would certainly plan a trip to Yosemite if it meant I could jump those gorgeous walls without having to run away from NPS rangers afterward.

I wonder if the NPS are aware of how BASE jumping works in the Swiss Valley, a place with far more "inherently dangerous" exit points than the enormous sheer walls of Half Dome and El Capitan?
