Besides the fact the I love Jasons post, I feel BASE is about the Object, NOT the deployment.
This approach is called
Ground Launching. Quite a lovely sport indeed
I know a speedflier who has checked out cliffs, buildings, antennas and spans as launch points...... apart from being in the UK tthese pretty suck... but are doable....so if he was to GL launch or rollover from these, would he then be able to claim his BASE number? Discuss....
I'm actually in Scotland now, and learning GL with Douggs, Ted, Jackie, Erica, Bisquit etc - a good speedflying crew growing up here (as there's nothing else to do in these god forsaken hills).
Anyway, a common launch on a windy day is to simply throw your canopy up in the air. A TARD, one may say, while still firmly planted on the hill or a cliff edge. It would be rather ridiculous to log it as a "BASE jump" now, would it?
