Do you count a rollover to get your BASE number?

Personally, I would not. For a qualifieing object, I would not do a staticline or PCA either. But that's just me.

One needs to exit with an un-deployed canopy for a BASE number. But... Rollovers are cool. Takes the same amount of determination.
Take care,

Rollovers are a lot of fun. So is ground launching and speedflying. They just aren't base jumps.

bsbd!

General rule of thumb in obtaining your BASE number:

If you have to ask if it qualifies, then it doesn't qualify.

Have a nice day!Wink

Besides the fact the I love Jasons post, I feel BASE is about the Object, NOT the deployment.

I feel that is the same as saying:
"Do I have to jump slider down to qualify for BASE?"

or
"Do I have to jump _WITHOUT_ a reserve to qualify for BASE?"

Jason (428) is spot on.

I jumped a control tower at an active major airport to get my building. Since I wasn't certain how to classify it, I went out jumped a different building to insure that I had a legitimate building to qualify.

The reason the base number inventors excluded tards was because there were some jumpers doing pull offs from towers using rounds and that was a lot easier and a lot less hardcore than actually jumping with a packed parachute.

PCA is just like a BASE jump, but with training wheels...

Personally I think a qualifier should be freefallen. seems odd to just do a pca to get your letter.

This approach is called Ground Launching. Quite a lovely sport indeed Wink

I know a speedflier who has checked out cliffs, buildings, antennas and spans as launch points...... apart from being in the UK tthese pretty suck... but are doable....so if he was to GL launch or rollover from these, would he then be able to claim his BASE number? Discuss....

I'm actually in Scotland now, and learning GL with Douggs, Ted, Jackie, Erica, Bisquit etc - a good speedflying crew growing up here (as there's nothing else to do in these god forsaken hills).

Anyway, a common launch on a windy day is to simply throw your canopy up in the air. A TARD, one may say, while still firmly planted on the hill or a cliff edge. It would be rather ridiculous to log it as a "BASE jump" now, would it? Wink

Re: [base75] It's a BASE Jump / Yes .. ?
I like the way somebody else put it once. If you jump off of something and freefall to deploy a canopy, and without you properly deploying and using that canopy you would die, then it's a base jump.

Probably not exactly those words and can't remember who said it, but that's how I feel. A McConkey isn't the same as kiting up a canopy. You have to nut up and jump off of something and you have to do it without gift wrapping yourself.

I mean, what difference does it make, really? If you're THAT desperate/impatient to call yourself a BASE jumper, I say count it and be done with it...and then go jump off something.
It's about the experience holmes.

+ 1

IMO it takes more balls to do a rollover than a PCA.
Jesus H. Christ, somebody else is deploying your parachute.

IMHO, I think the qualifications should be changed to "All objects should be virgin and all jumps should be unassisted freefall". That is the only way I'll ever apply for a number. I know, I know. Everybodies gonna say "stitch is just jealous". Whatever. I didn't get into FOP for a number.

The current trend is "The hold my hand and give it to me" sequence. With an average of 2 numbers per week being issued for the last few years I fail to see the work involved. There is a minority that did work for their numbers but they are rare.

Hey Space. When you coming to Houston? Anyway, you are CORRECT. The canopy has to start out packed just like a skydive since that's what we all knew in 1981 when the concept of BASE started. Static line, DB, OK. TARD, no. Plus, the canopy has to save your life so no 80 foot bridges over deep water. TARDS and McConkeys are cool to watch though.
