wet break cord
not sure if this has been brought up before, figure i would share. i landed in a river last month and had my break cord in my rig, it got wet and i let it dry. i went to do my first static line last night. i took my break cord out at home, pulled on it lightly and it broke. tried in a few more spots and it was falling apart in my hands. going to order a some online and will always throw break cord away if it gets wet. oh and first static line went great last night with fresh break cord!

Re: [Nocturnal59] wet break cord
Congrats on the first static line!!
Height? Solo? Object type? New?

Not poaching, just curious cause
my first S/L was a solo, open,
urban, crane, scary, rewarding.

Big kudos for being smart enough to
test the strength of your gear before
even leaving the house!!

Nice. I know that with climbing gear they say that nylon slings etc. lose alot of their tensile strength when wet.

260 freestander.
opened the object a week before and went handheld, figured be a good object to do first static line off. I read some of post about your takeaway static line, doesnt really mention how to build one with dacron line, how to make loops. you know where i can find more info on this?

Funny you should ask...

I am currently drafting a "how to"
document for Mick. Drop me a PM
& I'll send the link when complete.

FYI - to make a loop w/ dacron you
simply finger trap a piece line into
itself using a tool, some wire or fid.

From sailing experience I can tell you that nylon ropes lose about 10% of their strength when wet. I'm no sure how this would translate into webbing though. I used to climb many moons ago, fortunately I never tested the breaking strength of ropes or webbing.

Re: wet break cord
yeah, but saying that nylon looses ~10% of its breaking strength while wet is irrelevant, and very different than it also losing ~10% of its breaking strength after its been wetted and then dried. If you take a climbing rope, wet it, then dry it it will still be strong as ever. Climbing ropes/quickdraws/all climbing soft goods get wet all the time and people still climb on them, this case is different since the water caused obvious permanent deterioration of the break cord.
