HI,

Are you planning on organising a competition during the KL tour? I have heard both rumours that its on and off.

Cheers, Simon

Re: [meekerboy] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
No, there is no competition at Damai Wall during the KL Tour. In fact, there is no jumping at Damai that is part of the Tour this year. You are welcome to jump Damai anytime you want though. If you are attending the tour this year, I will be more than happy to bring you there plus some other spots.

As far as what I know, the 2009 tour destinations are still not been finalized. There are lots of changes every time I talk to them. There may be a couple new objects this year that is part of the tour but still pending approval etc. The dates are pretty much fixed though.

There will also be an event at KL tower on the 27th - 28th October (right after the tour). They are trying to get 24 jumps in 24 hours for some malaysian record or something. Pretty much 1 jump every hour. Don't have the full details yet. I believe, accommodation and some money will be provided for the entire week if you participate for this event. I remember Idros from KL Tower saying something around those lines to me. Don't quote me on this though.

Another event that is still pending approval is also right after KL tour. This event will be at Sabah and Sarawak. And I believe will be sometime during the weekend.

So, if your plan to be in Malaysia for the entire month of October, there will be lots of jumping day and night.

You should become the Malaysian record holder yourself. Even if you pack for yourself, 24 in 24 is a piece of cake.

Sure, 2 dozen skydives or BASE jumps
in one day for a reason is very doable.

Huh, well maybe, but then again how
does he get to the exit point? Climb
I assume from looking at the photos.

24 hours
24 pack jobs
24 BASE jumps
24 300 foot climbs

Doable but cake by no means!! Unless he is
related to Miles Daisher or Lance Armstrong Tongue

Re: [GreenMachine] Where's the rolly eye emoticon?
KL Tower has an elevator and an air conditioned room to pack in. Barring rain holds, it's easily doable.

People were doing 16 jumps during normal jump times including rain hold and lunch break.

Edit: Those were normal humans, Gary did more.

Sorry, my mistakle, I thought you were
referring to the 300 foot cliff in his post.

Re: [GreenMachine] calling...
Not that it's important, but to make sure it's clear.

Piece of cake or pie if you prefer.

who wants to jump 16 times in a day?

it seems more like work than fun.

Re: [460] Where's the rolly eye emoticon?
It's entirely up to you. 1 none or 16, it's all good.
Shortcut
Re: [hookitt] That's A Horse of a Different Color
I've done 17 tandems in less than 8 hours.

I'd gladly do 24 slider-up pack jobs & jumps
given the A/C, elevator, and no bust factor!

On the flipside, 24 jumps from the object in
his very first post would be tough stuff, IMO.

Re: [hookitt] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
That's correct, elevator to the exit point and air conditioned packing room. I am pretty sure for many of you 24 jumps in 24 hours is doable at KL tower. Not my cup of tea though. I have also heard that Gary does lots of jumps at KL tower. Probably he has done more than 24.

On the other hand, 24 jumps at Damai, may also be doable for some. There are three routes up to the exit point. The quickest route (which is also the hardest) takes 15 minutes if you don't stop to take long cigarette break on the way up. It's about the same difficulty as climbing straight up at the Perrine. The other two routes takes about 30-40 minutes. Not as hard as the first one. Weather becomes really hot after 11AM though at Damai. And the wind also picks up, which is mostly cross-wind at exit and landing. I usually start hiking at 7am and stop jumping at 11am because its just too hot to hike after that. The most i have done in a day at Damai is 4 jumps but I am not Miles Daisher.

Me. I did 9, 8, and 16 jumps in the 3 day event in KL in '07. That was a good pace, could of done more.

Spoke to Idros from KL Tower this morning and got more info regarding the "24 Hour" event. I created a separate thread for that. Apparently its a radio station that's sponsoring the event. Because they are named "Radio Bernama 24", they would like to have 24 jumpers jumping of the tower every hour for 24 hours. Guiness World of Record will be at the event. Not sure if this can be done, but we'll give it a try.

Hizam,

Are you saying Menara KL have no buildings for their event except KL Tower?
Things don't sound too stable over there. What buildings have Menara KL 100% secured for their event and which dates are they fixed for?
Shortcut
Re: [Gary_C] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
At this moment the buildings that are confirmed are:
1. Menara Taming Sari, Melaka 80 Meters
2. Menara Alor Ster, Kedah 165 Meters
3. Menara Komtar, Penang 238 Meters
4. KL Tower, KL 380 Meters

Everything else is still pending approval. We are gonna check out two new buildings in Terengganu in two weeks and hopefully that will be approved.

According to Menara KL, the dates are fixed but still no confirmation except for those above. No additional info at the moment.

The jump heights of all these buildings are much lower then what you have listed.

Are Menara KL moving their advertised event in Sarawak and Sabah to the end of October?

Besides, this forum, where is it being advertised? I've jumped everything but the taming tower so I can't comment on that one. I'm sure what you're posting is just copy and pasted here but they're not quite correct.

Gary what are the exit points?

I do wish to clarify one thing. I've met and jumped with hizamss here in the US. He is a very solid jumper.

Edit: See below for the advertised height from the website. It's a bit different than the exit points.

Re: Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
1. Menara Taming Sari, Melaka 110 meters http://www.menaratamingsari.com/the-tower.html

2. Menara Alor Ster, Kedah 165.5 meters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alor_Setar

3. Menara Komtar, Penang 232.0 meters http://www.malaysiasite.nl/komtareng.htm

4. KL Tower, KL 421.0 meters http://www.malaysiasite.nl/kltowereng.htm

I attached the websites in case I am reading the heights incorrectly. Hope this helps, maybe if you research those pages a bit you can figure out the jump heights?
Shortcut
Re: [TizzyLishNinja] Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
Hmmm... maybe but the get off point to Komtar which is the roof, is about 690 feet The lower exit is about 60 feet lower I believe.

Alor Setar Exit point is about 350. The full height is much higher.

I didn't read the entire thread and saw gary posted the same thing. I can try to search for the original information but I'm about ready to leave for a night of jumping.

Re: [Gary_C] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
I apologize for the misinformation regarding the heights. That's correct, I just copied and paste the info from the schedule that is provided from Menara KL. I do not represent Menara KL and just putting info out there from what i get over here.

According to Aziz, Sabah and Sarawak do not want to work with Menara KL. From what I know, at this moment, no jumps at Sabah and Sarawak that is part of KL Tour. But like you mentioned, hope it gets approved for the event you and aziz are working out.

Re: [hookitt] Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
For Taming Sari, the actual exit point is at 75 meter. Very shady landing are with lots of cars moving. The intended landing area is the carpark for the tower, which is right next to the tower.

On my jump there, I overshot the landing area to the main road that has lots of cars moving. Made a quick turn and ended up hitting the top of a bus and rolled to the ground. No injuries and walked away fine.

Re: [hizamss] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
Thanks for clearing a few things up Hizam.

The approximate jump heights of the buildings are:
1. Menara Taming Sari - 73 meters (240 feet)
2. Menara Alor Ster - 104 meters (340 feet)
3. Menara Komtar - Upper exit point - 210 meters (690 feet), Lower exit point – 196 meters (645 feet)
4. KL Tower - 301 meters (987 feet)

I have not been to Menara Taming Sari but the jump height I previously heard reported is a similar height that Hizam gives. I heard it could be a dodgy landing area but knowing Aziz had jumped it I assumed it should be sort of ok. I did not hear about a “solid” jumper crashing into a bus though. I wonder how Menara KL’s first jump students will go there. They don’t really seem to care about any carnage at their events but other officials in Malaysia are starting to.

Our Sabah event was planned for 27th, 28th and 29th October, which Menara KL knew. Now Hizam reports Menara KL will provide money to jumpers to stay in KL at that time. I have to question if it is another attempt by Menara KL to stop any event in Sabah that they cannot organise.

Menara KL did change their schedule to include Sabah at the beginning of their tour after hearing of our proposed event in Sabah. I know at least one BASE jumper has bought flights to start Menara KL’s event in Sabah on the assumption that their schedule is legitimate. I still think they will not be welcome back there.
Sabah officials feel “Menara KL have made a very sad impression of Base Jumping in Sabah” and will not give them any support this year. Menara KL still have one other path into an event there but that is also with people they did not make a good impression on last year. They also seem to have plenty of money provided by a sponsor that could help to buy their way in. There is still about 11 weeks before their event starts for them to force their way in there so I guess all hope is not gone for those who have already purchased flights to go there.

I did hear that Menara KL also had no response from Sarawak. I always assumed since the head of Menara KL seemed to have very close ties to one official in Sarawak that he would get their event going at the very last minute. But maybe he disgraced himself there too much last year also. We did not really have any intention to organise an event in Sarawak but there was the feeling from some Sarawak locals involved in organising previous events that they could get the event going there if Menara KL did not get their act together. Hence my question if Hizan was talking about Menara KL’s proposed events in Sarawak and Sabah.

Most likely we will not go ahead with our event in Sabah at this stage. Our approvals have still not come through and there are too many uncertainties with what Menara KL will do with their events. They tend to do very erratic things when they get desperate. I will leave it to them to continue with their own chaos. We will continue to work towards having events there at a more stable time.

It is the same reason that Damai wall is having an event in August for the locals there and you most likely would not see any event officially announced there around the Menara KL event. You can jump there any time you want anyway.

It would be nice to have events in Malaysia without all the chaos that Menara KL brings to them but I guess that is all part of the Malaysian experience. The buildings they REALLY have secured should be fine. Once jumping does eventually get started it usually flows very well. I always enjoy jumping there.

Re: [Gary_C] Malaysia, Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
I totally agree on everything Gary has posted. Once again, I do NOT represent menara kl or anybody. Since there is a lack of information that is given by menara kl, or regarding any BASE event in Malaysia, i decided to post updates base on what I hear and see. I believe it is very unfair for those that have committed their time and resource to not get correct information.

I disagree with a lot of things done by Menara KL so I keep my distance and enjoy the jumps at my own judgment. They still do give me access to their buildings.

We were at Taming Sari to do a trial jump. Aziz decided not to jump at the very last moment since the landing was not the best and ground crewed. We also have winds coming from two directions. I went last and hand held, opened a little low and didn't have much time for better landing. If the traffic is controlled better, it could be a safer object to jump.

I do still hope non-menara kl events takes place in Malaysia, to give a different perspective of BASE in Malaysia.

Accommodation, food, and transportation is provided if you coming from outside KL. Transportation is also provided from KL international Airport to Damai if needed.

I believe accommodation is going to be at a bunker hostel close by to Batu Caves, KL from 14th August until 17th August (Friday - Monday). There will be shuttle service from the hostel to Damai wall and food for the entire event.

Thanks,

Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge (15-16 August 2009)
The Damai Wall Accuracy Challenge has completed successfully. Points were given for landing at target plus additional points for landing on feet. Best of 5 jumps were taken to calculate total scores. Total of 15 jumpers participated.

The winners are:
1st: Nik Khairul Fahmi
2nd: Hizam Sahibudeen
3rd: Zainal Chik

We had one wall strike and one tree landing. Both survived with no injuries. The jumper that had the wall strike, kicked it off and landed safe. The jumper that landed on the tree cutaway his canopy and climbed down. Both jumper and canopy survived Smile

Overall, it was a great success. We had other competitions such as rock climbing, speed climbing, bouldering challenge, and lost of other games for the kids.

The Malaysian Tourism was very happy and hopefully we can have this event every year.

Peace,
Hizam
