turbulence and wingsuits

I want to start a discussion to hear how many people have experienced wingsuit "turbulence". I've had bumps and small buffets in the air before, but never like this flight. Crazy Fighting the suit the entire time, starting at 3 seconds into it. Really strong rocking motion having to let arm wings move around to stay pointed forward. Who knows, might have been pilot error but I didn't do anything much different from any of my other flights. Have other experienced this same phenomenon?

Looks like a late day jump at a desert site. Just a guess, but that rock has been heating up all day. Once the ground starts to cool down that rock will still have a good amount of heat left and will start popping off some bubbles and thermals. Also, the exit is in a bowl, which will act as a collector funnelling everything upwards. A 180 wind switch can be indicitive of thermal activity.

I think it might've been the GoPro attached to your foot disrupting the airflow Wink

I felt some turbulence today.

rough weather off of the base race cliff and felt like a whumf as i started cruising.

my take on this is that it does not happen if you are flying steep, aggressive and fast enough. charge fast and you power thru stuff.

part of my logic is based on Espen Fadnes' flying (fatsnake) he is always fast aggressive charging. none of this flat and slow stay in the air a long time BS. he does not believe in conditions affecting WS flight and has been known to pioneer rad stuff in adverse condtions. I think that this is because, yeah it doesnt affect him, smaller suit, lots of speed. he is good at gaining speed with exit before trying to go forward.

where as, fly closer to a stall point in your Vampire or similar and what do you know, you start feeling stuff.

if you think about it, it might be the same with skydive parachutes, the person floating about in there big docile parachute may get bucked around where as the front riser diving carving swooper dude may just cruise right through it.

or not...

From memory the exit there is nearly 10000ft, so that and thermally conditions are going to make for a shitty flight.

Was the wind left to right there JT? I jumped that place once in left to right and would probably walk down next time. Another guy on the load probably wishes he had of walked down that day.....

Any comments El Amarillo?Laugh

Dead wind at the exit, little bit on the south east when we hiked. Dead wind at the wall after exit, and then surprise. For the record, I try to fly straight, there is no turn involved in my flying there!
