It is with great regret that I inform you that one of my best friends and BASE mentor Robert Jones of Morpheus Technologies died yesterday morning while diving in Florida.

As you can understand, the family is dealing with the myriad of issues and emotions right now so please be understanding. Have no doubt that Morpheus will continue, but obviously, there will be a slight delay with production while the family is working through the grieving process.

Service arrangements will be announced as things progress.

Back when I worked for Apex BASE we had what we called the "knob grapevine" - a sort of early warning communication system between BASE gear manufacturers.

We used it to weed out those not quite ready for BASE, but who would call around to several manufactures and by doing so would figure out the right answers to the screening questions.

Robert and Kathy were always in the loop and we always shared a laugh or two over the pathetic nimrods wanting to BASE jump. In fact, now that I think of it, most you guys posting nowadays were the ones we warned each other about . . .

Staying at Robert and Kathy's house for a week with Robi, just over a month ago (for a wingsuit event at Zhills) Robert impressed me with his personality, flying, hospitality, friendlyness and willingness to help everyone and work hard on and for everything he did.

In the short week I got to know him, we talked about freediving a bit, and it really was a big love and passion for him. Though offering no real comfort, he exited this life doing one of the things he really loved...

I honestly cant believe he is gone now. I think its a great loss for BASE jumping, skydiving and all other sports, but especially people who's lives he touched.

My heart goes out to Kathy, and all of Roberts family and friends.

The world lost a great person today...

I met Rob on memorial weekend in Idaho a few years ago and he seemed like a great guy. Very nice and approachable. I'm so sorry for your loss Kathy.

Robert was a great friend and teacher that I had the great pleasure of knowing for the last 15 years. He always made time to answer any crazy question I had about BASE or skydiving and was an incredibly patient teacher. He was a great person to jump with and a great person just to hang out with. His ideas, innovations and input have brought our sport to a higher level. Rob my good friend, you will be greatly missed, more than I could ever say. As you are aware, our friend Robert Jones passed away May 30, 2009. Rob spent his time living life to its fullest and sharing his life with his wife, best friend, and life partner Kathy Gillespie-Jones.

Kathy has chosen to honor Rob by holding a Celebration of Rob's Life on June 24, 2009 from 6pm to 8pm. The celebration will be held in the Alice Hall Community Center located at 38116 Fifth Ave, Zephyrhills, FL.

After much thought, we've decided that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an account established to help fund Rob's granddaughter's (Brianna) education. Rob and Kathy have quietly paid for Brianna's education for years now, and we know that Rob would want to continue doing so. This is a simple savings account set up through Wachovia Bank and is in Brianna's name. Currently, checks should made out / sent to:

ah shit! i haven't been around the intrnet in a while or anyone BASE community wise so this is a shock to me!

I cant count how many times Robi has talked me threw wingsuit stuff etc. over the last 4 years! shit! one time in paticular went way out his way!

he's one of those guys you just thought was always gonna be there!
