Packing Clamps and the Airlines
As strick as the airlines have gotten with carry on items, has anyone had any issues with carrying packing clamps on a plane. Trying to avoid checking a bag and I dont want to go packing clamp shopping on vacation

HaHa, "Turn this plane around or I will clamp your A**"

I flew from Germany to Kuwait with packing clamps about a month ago. You flying inside the US?

Re: [walsrt01] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
I have flown from Tally to Twin Falls with clamps,
from Tally to Miami with clamps, and again from
Tally to Twin Falls with clamps --- No problems.

Honestly, I get more weird looks and minor bits
of discussion with TSA dispshits when flying with
my SKY gear than with my BASE gear.

Re: [walsrt01] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
My clamps became property of the airlines. Something about being able to sharpen them and stab or cut.

I laughed just a bit and and asked what am I going to sharpen them with? I just told them to keep em and bought new ones.

You might get them through, you might not.

Re: [hookitt] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
I've been questioned about them several times, usually they pull one out and look at it.
oddly enough, my hook knife has yet to draw any attention.

on unrelated note, I was putting my computer bag, belt, shoes etc through security, and realized I had my leatherman on my belt. figured I'd have to throw it away, so i just stuck it in my bag and sent it through the xray. did this all standing in front of a TSA. leatherman went through without so much as a raised eyebrow. feel safe everyone.

Re: [kcollier] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
In the last 3 months I have flown a little over 30,000 miles on business throughout the US. Always taking my base gear of course. The clamps have never been a problem. Funny side note related to the leatherman. I had a bottle opener with that lttle knife on it go through security at least 15 to 20 times in the last 3 months. then on my last flight I was in military dress travelling and I get pulled to the side and the corkscrew gets pulled out at taken from me. Ha. how ironic... knife gets through security that many times and gets taken when I'm in uniform. Gotta love the TSA.

Or you could all grow up and quit packing with clamps...

Respect your elders, I like clamps. Wink

Use em if ya got em, don't if ya don't. I'm clampidextrious so it doesn't matter to me.

Many of us have packed reserves
that saved lives WITHOUT clamps
but still use clamps on BASE gear
cause we already own them...

Re: [hookitt] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
If people can go either way, why bother traveling with them? I would rather use that allocated space and weight for socks, illicit drugs and/or personal lubricants.

That's a good point, I have lots of socks. I can pack quicker with clamps and it's easier in the wind.

The point is, the argument is silly, it's just clamps. I packed reserves without them for a long time. Started packing BASE rigs also without them. Now I use them if I have them and would rather have them.

Would I take them in the back country, no, to Malaysia or other structured event? You bet.

Re: [hookitt] Packing Clamps and the Airlines
we used to make shivs in prison from packing clamps and toothbrushes. the packing clamps required the use of an acetylene torch and a grinding wheel. funny since all the warden had to do was ban acetylene torches and grinding wheels. we would hold down the clamps with a shotgun when making these shivs.

My clamps have been an issue a couple of times on inter US flights but I've had several knives go through by mistake with no issue. TSA is just lame.

When I flew with clamps, my skydiving rig and a wingsuit, they thought I had a bunch of pairs of jumpercables. They were laughing when they opened my bag.

never had a problem carrying clamps on the plane, I've done it maybe 15 times.
