accordion openings
Hey,

This is how my openings look like ...Crazy It doesn't feel unconfortable what so ever, but still : I have never seen it on another canopy/jumper, so I would like to know if some of you guys know about this phenomenon ... I'm sure some do.

Could anybody give me clues about what is going on ?
Any advices or discussions welcome on the subject ...

Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
A discussion I had recently leads me to believe the brakes are set too shallow. What canopy is that and are you using the deep brake setting? How much tail wind was there?

The second surge is from releasing the brakes prior to pressurization and quickly letting them up all the way.

Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
does it seem that the canopy accordions after the brakes are popped ? Perhaps opening below stall and the sudden forward surge after the toggles are popped ?
Shortcut
Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
Looking again, the first part is fairly normal until you release the brakes and let up all the way.

You're very quick on the toggles but you may wish to clear them but not let them up all the way so fast. Generally it's a good Idea to keep them down part way. Start your turn by letting one up.

Adjust from there.

Re: [hookitt] accordion openings
You are releasing the brakes at ninja speed!

You are letting up on the control lines fully before the canopy itself pressurizes. Youve popping the brakes once only the bottom skins has expanded.

Slow down a bit, you got enviable reflexes upon opening, but this is the reason for your complaint here today.

FOX265, deep brake set.
No wind on first opening.
5-6 kts from my left on the second.

I'm aware of the whole process and results of my actions on releasing the brakes (just practising for dodgy situations Wink )

My question is about that accordion shape my canopy has, BEFORE I even touch the toggles.

Thanks for replying so quick to you all !!

No, my question is about the shape of canopy before action on toggles

bottom skin expansion prior to cell pressurization.

Re: [baseknut] accordion openings
do you think the multi could worsen it ? Or delay/prevent air inleting cells ?Shocked

Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
Multi wouldn't effect it. Shouldn't.

Multi is affixed to the top skin and hasn't proved much difference slider down. It wouldn't affect expansion of the bottom skin. Made to better perfect heading performance on a SU configuration.

I don't know what you mean by the second question.

Also, how many jumps is on this canopy? what kind is it?

you could just learn how to pack..... just a thought

Re: [fuzrb14] accordion openings
What do you tink is wrong with my packing ?
I mean : It opens fast, on heading, and it is very reliable/constant.

You could just learn how to explain yourself... just a thought

An easier way to say it is the "Canopy is breathing", that way more people get it.

When I read this it reminded of me the South Park where Jimmy and Timmy get in a fight and Cartman yells, "CRIPPLE FIGHHHHT" Laugh

I don't think he put much thought into that post though, or he probably would have backed it up with something about what he saw in your opening. Or what made him think your packing had something to do with it.

Re: [baseknut] accordion openings
I just thought multi could affect the shape because it's pulling between B and C lines.
Also, at this stage of deployment, ( when canopy is already spread), I think that bottom skin reflects what's happening on the top skin
And maybe on these jumps, the PCs were too big for the delays.

In the 2nd question, I meant : As the shape is distorted, maybe the air is not inleting properly, or taking delay/time to overcome the "squeeze" force of the multi.

It's a Fox 265, less than 100 jumps.

I think "bottom skin expansion" is happening before that accordion movement. Is it what you mean by "NO" ?

Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
Not really.

What I was referring to, was the breathing comment. Understanding inflation by calling it breathing? Nah

Oh god no... As much as I like the guy in person... oh nevermind.

Sorry I forgot to put the smiley on the last post .. Tongue

When are you coming back through the area?

Does your canopy have vents?
Shortcut
Re: [Sangi] accordion openings
Nope, simple FOX265. Works great.
Shortcut
Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
Maybe your openings and inflation is so dodgy because you're canopy doesn't have vents? I noticed that canopies without vents, tend to have that surge/wave effect while you're flying, while the canopy is not yet fully inflated...

I think that can't be the reason, as the canopy has no inflation problem.

Re: [marcltq] accordion openings
is this a one time occurrence? if it happens all the time then there is definitely something wrong. if not, the breathing characteristic may have been a simple fluke.
Shortcut
Re: [460] accordion openings
It happened on these two jumps, and it happens on most of my low jumps.
As I use a 48 ZP pc and my parachute has a multi, I wondered if it was possibly related : Maybe too much traction, on 3 different points spanwise, which are located between lines B and C... Just a thought, as Fuzrb14 'd say ...Wink
I couldn't see the shadow of a troll intriguing inside the canopy ...Tongue
But still, I'd like to have certainties about this phenomena ... (I hate unexplained things, especially when they occur on my BASE canopy on openings ... )MadCrazy
Thanks for your interest. Hope you can give me clues.
