Am starting to think about taking an FJC early next year (yes i know still far away!)
and am wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a rig before that and have some time to practive the packing and get familiar with the gear itself ?

i didnt purchase a rig. but my instructor lent me one to practice with. very helpful.

I had my canopy 6 months before and my container a couple of months before my first jump. Made 4 skydives with canopy on borrowed student rig. Practiced packing every night about a month before my FJC. Worked for me.

I dont think you need the container but I would encurage you to buy the canopy or a canopy, super raven or other big fat seven cell. Borrow some bodies old rig that will hold it out of there closet and jump it for while. like six months before you take the course or hell start jumping it now. You can get a raven out of an old reserve and whore it out for the next year for next to nothing. Best thing you can do to be ready to base jump.

I think that it depends on what FJC you're taking, and if you know people with extra rigs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Aiello's course includes free use of multiple rigs. If that's you're plan then you should wait until you're familiar with your different options. If you're headed to Kjerag, I'd suggest having your own gear.

My vote is YES.

I bought used gear, practice packed it many times,
also jumped the canopy out of a cessna practicing
canopy drills, so by the time I got to Tom A.'s FJC
packing was the least of my worries.

FYI - I have two old rigs in my gear closet, a big
Racer with main and reserve and an empty Vector
both can be had for cheap.

$400 gear deposit. but if you order new gear from him, it is put towards that rig.

if I asked the question it was more in the idea of getting plenty of time
to learn packing before the FJC and probably put some jumps on the base
canopy from a plane too.
from all you guys answers I guess it might not be a bad idea :)

Ill be doing my FJC in a few weeks, however I bought my whole rig back in October and have been practicing packing since and have also skydived with the canopy. Id say its a good idea as long as you have done your homework enough to know what kinda rig is good for you.
