West Virginia Bridge Day
Has the decision been made to use the Holiday Inn or the campground as the central BASE accommodations for West Virginia's Bridge Day? I'll definitely be there if it's the campground.

Re: [460] West Virginia Bridge Day
Campground this year. I'm excited about the change. I'll try to upload some photos of our new accommodations this weekend.

I recently found out that it WAS a Holiday Inn employee who called the cops on jumpers last year regarding open containers outside the hotel. Although Holiday Inn management didn't believe me, they later found out one of their own was calling his cop friends to bust jumpers when they walked 5 feet out the front door of the hotel. Fayette county has a crazy open container law where people can be cited if seen outside with a beer from a public place (road, etc.).

Good riddance, Holiday Inn.

Although our headquarters will be based at a campground with a large lodge and bar, jumpers can stay at other hotels nearby. One hotel, the Comfort Inn, is actually visible from the campground and is only a 5-10 minute walk. We already have 100 hotel rooms held for jumpers at the Comfort Inn and Quality Inn and 15 cabins at the campground.

CYA!

So how did the old hotel take the news?

I bet they won't be happy, especially with the economy the way it is... Hopefully they will beg us to come back, but offer jumpers and you a better deal?

Re: [leroydb] West Virginia Bridge Day
Holiday Inn management hasn't offered comment. I did speak with another Holiday Inn employee who expressed regret over losing our business. There is another angle to this mess in which new hotel owners are anxious to raise rates and focus on $ only. Keep in mind the main reason we left was due to a $1500 price increase in MY rates alone for ballroom rental and new "cleaning" fees. Also, note that room rates rose to $247/night once I told them we're going elsewhere. Money, money, money. I doubt they'll be offering me a better deal until they see a profit loss this October.

Jason,

In reference to the rooms/cabins that you have blocked for jumpers, is there a date that we need to reserve a room like we did with the Holiday Inn?

Thanks for all your work,

Chip

Registered jumpers will be able to reserve rooms starting August 1st. You can pick from the following lodging:

-15 cabins at River Expeditions. Cabins feature six bunks with double-size foam mattresses, electricity, lights, and porch. You supply pillows, sleeping bags or bedding and blankets. Cabins are located near the showerhouse and restrooms. I'll take more detailed pics shortly. Price is $65/Night on Sunday - Thursday and $75/Night on Friday - Saturday.

-Camping at River Expeditions (unlimited # of tents). Price is $10/Person/Night on Sunday - Thursday and $15/Person/Night on Friday - Saturday.

-Unknown number of Tents on Platforms, which are a convenient way for you to enjoy all the fun of camping, without all the hassle of packing a tent, setting it up and tearing it down. Their large, four-person tents are set up on wooden platforms and covered by a tin roof to protect you from the elements. They come equipped with four foam mattresses - the only gear you will need to bring is your sleeping bag or bedding, and pillow. Price: $40/Night on Sunday - Thursday and $45/Night on Friday - Saturday.

-5 RV sites (3 on Fri/Sat) at River Expeditions. RV Sites are new and improved this year, complete with water and electric hook ups and even a dump station on-site. Sites are centrally located near the showerhouse/restrooms and feature a fire ring and picnic table so you can still enjoy the best part of camping, even if you're only semi-roughing it. Price: $35/Night on Sunday - Thursday and $40/Night on Friday - Saturday.

-50 rooms at the Comfort Inn across the street from River Expeditions. I believe the price is around $190/night on Friday and Saturday. It's considerably cheaper earlier in the week.

-50 rooms at the Quality Inn (the closest motel to the bridge). I'll also have to confirm pricing on this motel, but I believe it's around $175/night Friday and Saturday. Once again, cheaper prices are available earlier in the week.

We're still working out some details, but all this info should be in the Bridge Day 2009 website very soon. Don't forget we (Skydive Inc. and Vertical Visions) have a C-182 and Stearman biplane at a small airport about a mile down the road from River Expeditions. There's nothing like a scenic plane ride near the NRGB followed by a skydive. Skydive Inc's "Skydive The Bridge" website provides more details

We're (Skydive Inc.) planning on having our plane down in WV at the Fayetteville Airport by Tuesday for anyone planning on being there prior to Bridge Day and interested in making some jumps.

We figured since we shut down the DZ for Bridge Day anyways, (we're a very base friendly DZ and 90% of my staff goes down every year...) it would be cool to provide the opportunity to check out the bridge from a different perspective or maybe do some wingsuit loads over it. It's also a good chance to toss that base canopy in a skydive rig and put a couple of jumps on it before the actual bridge. Hopefully we can pull in some tandem business from the spectators and make it worthwhile to do this every year.

If anyone is going to Bridge Day and is going to stay at the Comfort Inn or Quality Inn and is not yet a Choice Privileges member, shoot me a PM. As an employee at Choice, we're being asked to help sign up new members this year (and they are giving away vacation days as an incentive Wink).

You'll get an extra 500 Privileges points after you book your first stay.

Thanks!

Re: [avenfoto] West Virginia Bridge Day
i am from oak hill (where the holiday inn is) there are several places throughout the area that offer cabins with hot tubs, fire places, large capacity, and a few companies have very new cabins (built this year). I'd check with Class VI http://www.class-vi.com/, they have the newest ones, Songer whitewater also has some really nice places http://www.songerwhitewater.com/. there are other places as well all over the area, Rivermen also has cabins that some of my friends from VA have been renting the past couple of years for Bridge Day. BD weekend is the last weekend of Gauley season as well so there will be a fairly large demand for a lot of these places, so if a big cabin is what you're after i'd get on it sooner that later. HOWEVER, as you've seen in earlier posts in this thread the Fayette county authorities are out there and they know when Bridge Day is and where all the campgrounds/cabins are located, so if you plan on being at the party at River Expeditions where Jason has the event scheduled drinking and driving is a big gamble here, I grew up in the area and know first hand (no dui's for me but several friends).

Cheers
