Crane BASE Event... Interest?
Would there be interest in a crane event in the US? Not sure of a location, but I'm exploring the costs of a crane (rental or purchase an old one). I'm thinking something in the range of 350-380 feet. I live in Charleston, SC, so I'd probably try to organize something near here. The crane company may or may not rent me a crane, but I got quoted $500/hour for a 360 foot lift capacity. Not sure of what kind of liability insurance would be required either.

If you build it, they will come.

Travel time from rental place to the site?

How many jumpers does that crane hold?

How long does it take to raise & lower it?

With those 3 variables one can calculate
the total approximate number of jumps
per hour.

Then divide the $500 hourly rate by jumps
per hour to find a per jump cost necessary
just to break-even.

146 meters = 478 feet

That's a big fucking crane
however their freefall and
canopy times seem short.

I'd give the guys at UKProBASE a whistle, they know about setting up crane boogies. They also set up legal wind turbine jumps.

not to be a cynic, but you have a lot on your plate - buying a tower, buying land around it, doing a crane boogie...

why not concentrate on one project ? It's not like all those things have not been attempted before, and most had either too much red tape, or the people got burned out..

but yeah, bring it, and I will jump it :)

Re: [GreenMachine] Crane Economics
They typically charge a 1 hour standard travel rate plus a setup fee which takes about a half an hour to a full hour depending on the Type of crane (you would want a RT crane with a extendable boom) it takes a lot less $ to setup.

Also need a man basket that would fit about four people with a swinging door, (unless a custom platform is made) the crane company may or may not have that.

Could easily figure it would take less than 5 mintues to go up slowly and less than 5 to go down.

Can all 4 guys in the 'man basket' jump or
does one of them need to lower the bucket?

Re: [GreenMachine] Crane Economics
Everyone could jump. A operator is covered in the cost of the crane for those larger ones. They don't want some idiot tearing up their investment. That's where i wonder how others have done it, i can imagine the call from the operator to his boss, "these guys are jumping out of this f_cking thing" and his boss telling him to "shut it down!"

Still no firm offer by the tower company... I have to wait for the other person buying land to close to find out where it is... and now I'm thinking something mobile would be better... especially if it is the same height...

I discussed the purpose with the rental company... initially they said no... then after discussing a little bit, he said he would talk to corporate and see if it would be allowed... almighty dollar always wins...
