Employer & BASE
I know this subject has been covered in the past but I would like to hear from those who have been presented with the following scenario.

You get a good job offer from a company that does defense contracts and has security clearances. Even though your background is clean, there is always the potential to get some trespassing/BS related violation in the future which could be grounds for dismissal. They will make a new hire sign an employment at will agreement on day one which means they can basically terminate you at any time for any reason. Getting caught in the aforementioned scenario could be considered a conflict of interest from the employers perspective.

If you have been in this situation, have you tapered down your local jumps and stick to the more common Potato/BD/Moab sites rather than doing the local stuff? If not, what is your rationale to keep jumping even though the potential for getting caught even though small, does exist? I am also not sure how often employers of this type research the backgrounds of employees after they have been hired.

Any input via PM or post would be appreciated.

Thanks

Professionals Who Jump
Had a job with government clearance doing
economic analysis for the department of
defense... the econ joint I worked for did
not even like that I skydived!

Ended up getting laid off due to money being
moved from fighting frivolous lawsuits to
fighting the war on terror post 9/11.

Had a job with a private software firm doing
analysis work mostly for the State of Florida,
they were sketchy on me skydiving and hated
that I started BASE jumping.

Ended up getting laid off when the State had
a budget problem and decreased their use of
outside consultants.

Currently about to get laid off from teaching
economics at a community college, they knew
from day one that I skydive and occasionally
BASE jump... of course the lay off will be due
to the budget crisis in Florida and not to my
passions but nonetheless sucks for me.

Most employers would prefer we drive drunk,
beat our wives, and watch television than to
do what scares them to their core.

We are too real for most of them!!!

Oh and it is Spring Break so I am already
working on my 5th beer, fuck all of you guys,

Man, I feel ya... I have to be careful myself, but sometimes you have to pay to play. I just try to be steathly when appropriate and hit the legal stuff when I get time.

Just don't get a felony or let your boss know your personal business. Personal life should be just that.

A skydiving attorney friend of mine recommended if I take this job, do the legal BASE stuff only. His rationale was getting caught even for a small charge opens up a world of shit that can bite the employer in the ass. He mentioned several possible scenarios and they all make sense and probably will fire if they find out. He also said it may not hurt disclosing what you do (just not the darker stuff) so if trouble arises, it will not be as much a shock (I am not leaning toward this option at all).

Basically, I am looking to see if others curbed the after hours lifestyle or continue to do what they like and take a chance.

i have a gig that would fire me instantly for getting caught jumping bandit. i rolled the dice early on but now i just do legal jumps, mostly in europe the 2-4 times a year i'm their. to me it's all a matter of personal preference, i never really enjoyed sneaking around to jump but that's me. i would rather be able to bang out lots of jumps without worry. as is almost the case with all decisions when base jumping you have to analyze the cost/benefit and determine for yourself if you want to risk it.

I worked for a self-insured company. they knew I skydived. when the health insurance policy got renewed, it had a clause against paying for injuries related to high risk sports, such as skydiving.

so, some companies DO care, and not simply about the legalities of it...

If I get caught I am well aware that my employer will blow me right out without judge or jury because my jumping flys in the face of the job/career that I uphold.

Re: [rpersi] Employer & BASE
I used to have a job with a major Russian investment bank. One day, I was stupid enough to agree to a close-up 10-seconds TV interview at the LZ of a LEGAL excibition BASE-jump. I got fired in 2 days after it was shown in the evening news :)

Now working in another bank and keep a low jumping profile - I have to support my family, too. I don't even let my jumpmates to get me on video :)

In case of being busted / caught during trespassing, I'm not going to disclose my job info to ACAB. Instead, it'd be enough to say you're unemployed, and they will be unable / unwilling to check it as long as you have an ID with you certifying your place of residence. Therefore, the employer won't know if I get behind bars for several hours in the night. Of course, I don't do bandit jumps in the nights preceding business days.

But trespassing in Russia is not a criminal, but only an administrative violation worth a 500 RUB (less than $20) fine if you do it officially, or the same amount if you prefer to bribe the cops and be released in 10 minutes after you got caught :) Come to Moscow - trespassing and jumping are very funny over here :)

Edited to add: Well, in a very low probable case my current employer learns about my out-of-office habits (serious injury, or otherwise), I know I'm likely to be fired again... C'est la vie, I'll find another job, my family will support me back meanwhile.
