Hi,

I want to ask if a small tear in a crossport on a Furry 220
(otherwise in excellent condition) is a big problem? and must be fixed prior to basejump?

The system is perigee classic with Furry 220 (with tail pocket and 2 brake settings).

I also want to ask if is ok to install a tail gate without bartacking but just zick-zack stitching?

Sorry, I have read Poynter's manual advice about
how to fix a tear in a crossport........but living in a country with nearly non existent parachute materials and tools (for civilians), someone must order everything from USA and this take time..

Any advice or experience? I'll much appreciate it.

just use three raps of masking tape instead of trying to install a tailgate

The crossport tear will probably be ok for one jump, but it's your life.

A tailgate installed with zig-zag is fine--the stitches aren't directly load bearing anyway.

crossports are round to prevent stresses from concentrating at a sharp point.

the ribs carry weight.

thus the tear will concentrate all the local stresses on that spot. the key question is how much stress will be there?

a tear in the crossport could open up like a zipper. it also could do nothing. much will depend on it's actual location.

I may order some material from Atair....I still need to find a hot knive to do a proper patch.

The tear is too small like 1 inch....but as wwarped-Tom said could get really bad after a few jumps.
The damaged crossport is located on 5th cell-11th rib near the leading edge.

I did a search in this forum and looks like masking tape is a good solution...many people use it.

The canopy is of one friend of me, I just did an inspection......I may ask him what he prefers.....but
nice that we can install the tailgate without bartacking......we haven't got any access to professional machine...

Not to detract from folks who might insist on a BASE specific canopy, the Fury 220 (after about serial # 150 where they went to the almost plastic reinforced flares) was/is considered one of the best F-111 canopies ever made.

The best was Pegasus (Im sure Mojo is almost a blue copy), I had both, and a fury comes way down the list! Get yourselves a new canopy! This was the best you could get 20 years ago, not in 2009.

After the patent fight, Mike Fury put flares on the pegasus and called it "Fury."

My modified pegasus was an 1982 model. I got the Fury in 1993 and can not remember when it was made. I never basejumped it. I then had a Maverik made in 88, modified by Marta. Finely I got myselves a Mojo, thats when I really felt I had MY MOJO!

I dont know the history of Pegasus and Fury. Can you update us a bit?
