Bungee jumping as part of preparation for BASE
Has anyone ever considered/practiced bungee jumping as a training method for BASE jumping (still-air exits)? As for bungee I've only made 1 jump so far but I think one could easily and safely be taught how to exit in the proper body position. I am sure I'm not the first one to come up with this, just would like to hear some opinions/experiences from experienced jumpers.
Thanks and BTW I did a search on this but found nothing.

I think the most important thing in BASE is comfort/confidence in spacial orientation when jumping, leaving every part of the brain to concentrate on using the equipment properly. I have no doubt bungee jumping is very helpful in exit practice. anything where your jumping from something and not landing on your feet is good. but it's also very expensive and just as difficult to come by as regular BASE jumping, so really only good for specialized cases.

I understand the point of concentrating on equipment during BASE jump and it has occured to me too. As for the price, I paid the same price for my bungee jump as I pay for plane ticket to 14k and rig rental. I dont know about anywhere else but here in central europe bungee isnt anything really new or unreachable. There are lot of bridges from 150 to 300 ft tall officialy hosting bungee jumpers. On one particular bridge you can even get legal 6+ sec of freefall on a bungee jump.

i have roughly 50 bungee jumps. i lived in vegas for years and they used to have that tower next to circus circus. too bad at the time i wasnt even a skydiver and didnt know i would become obsessed with the pursuit of fixed object jumping, but damn that shit was fun while it lasted. wed get hammered and go bungee jumping and fuck with the nervous tourists/first timers..........

Back in the pre-potato days, bungee exit practice (from a Balloon) was a standard part of the Basic Research FJC.

I did a couple before BASE. It was worthwhile since it was a neighbouring bridge to that off which we usually throw first jumpers. The only thing is that they want you to go head low, in a diving position due to the snatch especially from the higher ones; that's not good for BASE. I think a rope jump is probably better since you could assume the same exit as for BASE.

I did a 150-200ft side floater rope jump with my mentor before I took my FJC. That was awesome.

On some lower bridges you can choose to bind the bungee around your hips and not around your ankles. This setup allows you to jump in position you want. Kind of like on a regular rope jump as you said.

Did anyone here ever heard about practicing pulling/ throwing dummy PC during a practice bungee?? Is that something likely to do or its just a bullshit??

Looks like a practice pull at 0:21. Just wondering if the jumper went a little headdown at 0:20 because of the fast arm movement into a 'tracking' position??

Re: [TomAiello] Bungee jumping as part of preparation for BASE
As Tom says, this was part of the BR course once upon a time. When I did it, jumps were on a short bungee with maybe a 30-foot drop, bungee attached on what I recall being a regular full-body harness for climbing so that the "snatch force" from the bungee pulls you vertical. A rope system was used to haul people back onto the catwalk of the (very short) bridge we were jumping from. Practiced pitching and getting to the risers a few times there.

... Then got pulled over by immigration on our way back. Somebody had seen us coming back out from under the bridge and hopping into a truck. Apparently that's not kosher in southern California? Cops couldn't care less what we were doing once they determined that nobody there was Mexican. Smile

yeah, i did it as training for base before my FJC. At the time there was an unlimited bungee jump deal where i was staying while travelling in OZ. So i paid and did as many as i could in a day, i think i stopped at about 20.

It really helped, not only with the "stepping off" nerves but also with the head high exit required for the FJC i had booked in the US a month or so after.

if you can get a lot of jumps in like that i would recommend it, as Tom said it used to be part of one of the base FJC,s and i am sure thats where i got the idea from.
