An epic 'fail'....
Lovely 280ft building.
Access re established , much to our surprise and delight, on a wonderful calm night...where the sky was clear and the moon high...

Exit point even better than before....now a perfect, unobstructed ledge at the very tippy top

Throw a WDI.....straight down....sweet

Turn to Jumper 2....OK mate lets get it on.

Open stash bag....reach in a pull out a climbing harness then a rubber mattress, then some slings and a Carabiner....but no rig.
Look of complete surprise....shock and dissapointment....
I'd picked up the wrong stash bag out the car,not the one with a rig but the one that had all my extra bits and bobs in.

Perfect conditions, up top....but no rig Unimpressed

I swear jumper 2 was giggling as he jumped ....bastard

An unnamed jumper had a similar experience, he flew to a northern European country for a trip - on arrival realised he had forgotten his rig Smile

Then there was another unnamed jumper who on arrival at the exit of an E put his stash bag down, it started to roll and exited by itself. It took his friends half an hour to stop laughing Tongue

Me and Martin ...

380 feet antenna, gearing up and it's cold. Ready to go and turn around ... Martin is holding the end of his bridle ... I said "oops" ... Martin said " I swear it was i pilot chute here when I packed"

I wait Martin is climbing down AND up again =) Nice jump =)

I had a stash bag roll off the edge at the Mushroom. I could see it caught on the rocks about 100ft down as I sailed past it freefall. Bah!

I once stepped over my bridle while gearing up at the top (on the roof) of 49m B. I heard my bottom pin pop and managed grab the rig just enough to control the packjob so it didn't fall completely from the rig. Fellow jumper then helped me to get the rig down while trying to distort the packjob as little as possible. After a short moment of thinking I neated the packjob a little, closed the rig and we jumped. Nice jump! :)

I have nightmares like that, but in them I get all the way to like the Perrine or Moab before realizing I don't have my rig.

Re: [unclecharlie95] An epic 'fail'....
Same happened to a friend last year at La Mousse.
He came there with a TV crew who wanted to film his jumps, put his stashbag on the ground, turned around to chat with them while his stuff started rolling towards the edge in slow motion and went over...

That was fun, at least for everyone else... ;)

I had my PC fall out once while climbing an antenna and luckily tr027 was able to climb up behind me, get stable in the antenna and close my container, and then restow my pilot chute for me. Thanks Tony Wink

Re: [d_goldsmith] An epic 'fail'....
Had two 180s in a row of this nice 270' freestander. So I spend alot of time inspecting the trim and harness, and even more time inspecting and being OCD on my packjob. Ever tape was facing the right way. I swear that not a single wrinkle was in the nylon anywhere. After I closed my rig I picked it up to shake the packjob and get it lower in the container. When I lifted it to do one more drop shake I stepped on the bridle and as I lifted it popped both pins and out fell the packjob. Unimpressed Not fun! But got more practice on a really nice packjob.

Another pretty funny story was when we were sitting last summer at Horner after a jump and having coffee and relaxing. We had been sitting there for a while and people have been coming and going. And then suddenly Ben's phone rang and the conversation went pretty much like :

R : "Hey Ben, what's up?"
B : "Nothing much, just chilling, why?"
R : "You missing something?"
B : "Humm... Not that I know of... Should I be?"
R : "Yeah"

Ben looks around and realises that he cannot spot his stashbag anywhere.

B : "My rig maybe?"
R : "Indeed... We are here at the gear up of the high nose and when we started to gear up this one guy opened a stashbag that he thought was his, only to find out he has accidentally taken yours with your unpakced rig inside"

Poor guy, we left the bar for a jump and met him in winteregg when he had walked all the way back up from high nose with Ben's unpacked rig in boiling 20-30 degree summer sunshine.

That story (and many others) bring back some good memories. Fly free Ben, we miss you!

Re: [maretus] An epic 'fail'....
These stories are great!

One of my own FAILs was last fall. We'd already been to atleast 2 objects, but neither was a go. So we went to see this new slider down guyed A, 100m tall or so. The winds were allright so we started climbing, but once we got a little over halfway up, the winds started howling and we could see a thunderstorm coming our way. I was the bottom guy on the very, very narrow inside ladder and said out loud that I was going to climb down (This is likely the bitchiest climb on an A I've done so far). The other 2 jumpers were still undecided at this point.

I got maybe 10 meters down (I could feel my rig touching the structure at times) when I heard the very unpleasant sound 'pop - pop' from my back. I had probably somehow rubbed out my tucked-in bridle and it snagged on something. I was able to keep the pack job in the container for another 5m down or so, climbing down with one hand and holding the container flaps with the other behind my back. The packjob then proceeded to fall out. I had to stash the canopy in my lap and slowly continue the rest of the way down. It was one of the most unpleasant things I've ever done. The others had to pass me on the outside route (the A is fairly visible so we we're kind of in a hurry) and I was so pissed off that I was seriously considering cutting away and dropping the canopy... I'm glad I didn't, with my luck it would have ended up high up in a tree or around a guy wire!

I absolutely hated the climb down. If you're ever bored on a climb down, try climbing down with one hand and a parachute in your lap. You'll be surprised at how much it sucks. But it was very funny afterwards!

I have an axe to grind with that piece of metal and I will have a new go at it sooner or later. I think I'll climb on the outside, though...

Re: [baseknut] An epic 'fail'....
Ive done the step on the bridle while shaking the packjob as well, adn also the shake the velcro a little too hard and plop out a packjob.

My favorite, after a 1.5 hour climb to 1750 feet.
1. How come you dont have a handle on your pilot shoot?
2. What?
1. Yah mine does
2. Oh shit, because its my 46.

We discussed the situation, and jumper 2 decided to climb all the way back down. I believe he quit base jumping the next week.
