Please forgive me. I have a stupid question.
Why NOT use a reserve? I get the "you dont have enough time to cut away and deploy it so why have it" reason but why not have it just in case you DO have enough time or why not just open the reserve without cutting away. Might work, might not but at least you have a chance.

Re: [mazz] Please forgive me. I have a stupid question.
our parachutes work reliably enough, and as you pointed out, opening too low. A reserve adds complexity and weight to a system that works just fine.

Re: [mazz] Please forgive me. I have a stupid question.
Where would you put this reserve? It would have to be packed similarly to the main to open fast enough. Having to think about if you are high enough to pull a reserve would waste the altitude the would make it possible.

No such thing as a stupid question.
As Calvin said; weight and complexity.
There was the Sorcerer manufactured by Vertigo at the time; I don't know if Apex still offers it. A good system but I much prefer my single.

because a reserve and main entanglement is very bad news not matter what altitude you're at. hence the RSL, Skyhook ect.

Huh ? Cutaway, fall away, deploy reserve.

As people pointed out: not enough altitude, extra weight and complexity to the rig, canopy entanglements..

As far as I read, base systems are much more reliable than skydiving ones and the only canopy problem (correct me if I'm wrong) I see is a lineover, which can be cleared by WLO toggles or a hook knife.. Smile

Essentially, we DO jump a reserve...we just don't jump a "main!" A "proper" BASE packjob is usually comparable to a traditional "reserve" packjob with minor differences, which in my opinion, make it somewhat MORE reliable than a reserve.

Jump Sonic's rig.

weight and complexity is the prime reason. plus the fact that people got used to jumping single parachute systems. the single parachute systems were originally designed only for 600 foot and less and anything above that was considered a foot launched skydive and was considered jump anything without a reserve. most of the old timers didn't do very long delays.

watch me pack my main for skydiving

then watch me pack my base canopy

and you'll know the answer

We use parachutes?

What's a reserve!?Crazy
Shortcut
Re: [Racha_Rodriguez] Please forgive me. I have a stupid question.

The reason is very simple. It's out of fashion. There was a time when it was in fashion and people did jump Sorcorers or modified riggs. We got away from it but it would only take one very pubblic accedent at say Milasia for example. A friction knot with slider hang up and people might start to reexamin the idea of some thing like a sorcerer.

jumping without a reserve gets you laid

Re: [kcollier] Please forgive me. I have a stupid question.
jumping without a reserve hasn't helped me at all to get laid. usually it requires taking a shower, dressing nice, being well groomed, funny, and hanging out at a place with a bunch of slutty women.

Yeah, it's probably your sense of humor that's doing the trick.
