Static line 170' balcony of apartment building?
First, Good idea or bad idea? I have a friend that lives on the 17th floor of an apartment building (estimating 10 ft per floor). Anyone have any experience doing static line from a balcony? Are there any additional complications? Is 170 doable? I read 200ft static line is considered normal. LZ is a non busy street and jump would be late night.
Thanks!

sure... but you know what they say about asking questions like this on the internet.

lots of variables.

also, remember... they don't normally build a "13th" floor... so it's probably really the 16th which would give you 10 less feet according to your calculations.

Good advise Elliot,,,,,,, He's right it can be done but shit happens fast at those altitudes. BE SAFE!!!!!!

This could be quite inaccurate. My old apartment building was 8'6" between floors, which would put you down around 145'. The easiest way to get a more accurate estimate is to measure the distance between floors in the stairwell.

When planning the jump, looking at what you hope will happen is only a small part of things. If you have an off-heading opening, what do your outs look like? From 170', there isn't much you can do about a large off-heading.

Borrow or buy a damned laser range finder.

Best advice: Don't jump this dirty low shit building.
The jump is not worth the risk.

A pc hesitation or building strike could easy kill you.

Edit: Crazy sry.....i didnt get it, i was thinking you will made a freefall jump, again sorry.

if you've gotta ask.. don't do it. If it were worth considering (for you) you'd already know the answer.

I've done two SL jumps from a hotel balcony at 175'. It was the 20th floor, so the 10' per floor rule can be way off, get a rangefinder, or steal a 200' tape measure from the local track team.Tongue If the landing area rquires a 90 you are going to need to be quick, but be sure to not clear the toggles before the canopy starts flying. I did this on my second jump and caused the canopy to stall on opening. It recovered, mostly, but I would not have wanted to take that landing on pavement.

Agreed. Good to ask questions but just the observation that you need to ask if its doable, don't even know the height, and appear unaware of other potential concerns and variables makes it very clear that you are not ready.

Have you ever made a static line jump?

We've got a B that's 18 floors and 230'.

That's 12.8'/floor.

Go to Home Depot, buy some wood, build a ramp. Then call Pastrana to see about borrowing a dirt bike. This should provide adequete seperation and a little extra altitude.

sounds good if the landing is good.
ive done 25 or so s/l from 168' at a local B. ive personaly turned the canopy 180 and had a nice landing multiple times, and seen another local complete a 270 turn. if you can keep your head in the game and act appropriatly and quickly 170' should be fine.

but then then thid is all internet ramble and you need to make your own assesment of the jump.

things do happen fast, esepecially your frst time at this height. after a dozen you feel like you have tons of time... hence trying to see who can turn the most and still stand up the landing.

***however if your info is correct you dont have very much experience. the building aint going anywhere so take it slow until you feel ready. ***

That's typical of commercial buildings with suspended ceilings. In residential buildings, they don't usually put that much space between floors. Is your B an office building?

My first B was a 26 story 195' condo building. That's 7.5' per floor. Range finder is definitely a good idea. I jumped this with my blackjack (vents and valves) twice, 12 seconds from launch to landing both times. Ace was 6 seconds from launch to landing. I'm sure if I had more data to compare and average those numbers wouldn't be so far apart though.

It was a transportation hub with office space. It was built in the early 1900's before they really had to worry about heating costs so it's got tall ceilings. The lobby has huge vaulted ceilings which skews the average also.

...the best part is that it's completely abandoned.

Yea, that was kinda the point of my first post, # of floors can be kinda irrelevant when calculating the overall height. The best bet is to laser it or research the "as built" height.

how high are the lightbulps below, anything else to hit below canopy? what about offheaddings..
what is your experience(not much as you ask),can you launch SL corectly?
for you i would say no go,if you dont know the limits your in no way right to play that game,if you choose to then you mostlikely will get injuryed.
Hope you grow experience before you take up this challenged, thats the most healthy advise i can give you.

If its duable? despite of lz yes mostlikely if you know what your up to.
