Have you seen changes since NameMedia took over?
I've read enough anti-corporate posts, that I wonder what the general mood is out there. and yes, if possible and practical, I like supporting our own. (if not, let's recruit outsiders to our cause.)

feel free to state what you want, only the standard rules apply. it seems Jay is fine with insulting NameMedia, so go for it. I think you ought to say why, otherwise no one can change anything.

BASE jumpers tend to care and appear to be above average intelligence to me. I'd prefer thoughtful complaints.

Yes. Both sites have an increase in noise to signal ratio.

How's that?

Ahem... I've done zero, zilch, nada, nothing to affect noise to signal one way or another. On BASEjumper.com since Namemedia took over (specifically since I came on board)...

1. Bugs get fixed faster.
2. Problems with site infrastructure get communicated right away.
3. Photos, videos and articles are being approved regularly.
4. Additional protection for classified users has been installed.
5. Every single support email, PM or question for me in the forums gets answered personally and quickly.

When I came on, I told everybody here I was going to leave you guys alone to do what you will. I've held to that promise dogmatically and only stepped in for the above reasons. So, if the signal to noise is unacceptable, it's probably the natural ebb and flow of online forums.

Though I have certainly done more on DZ than here, in the DZ forums it's exactly the same. I do not moderate those forums except in extreme circumstances. An example: when some guy was selling fake Rolexes in the Classifieds and mining the forums for marketing data, I banned the hell out of him.

Oh, and Namemedia sucks! Tongue

You should. Count how many posts add value in comparison to those that don't, it's pathetic.

What's your definition of "value"?

Agreed. I wouldn't say you've caused it, nor could I for sure say that it's been specifically since the NM transfer. It may be that natural ebb and flow, but I notice it just the same.

And to hookitt , I can't put my finger on it, but yeah, things have changed at DZ.com, and they got worse for the BJ forum, when it was moved into being it's own site.

a few times, I've gone back through old posts. I found that there were some solid discussions.

were there more technical issues back then?
was there more innovation back then?
do I feel this way because I knew less back then?

I really don't know.

the answer is easy, just post signal, not noise. (anyone can speak up against noise as well.) the key is to participate positively. start interesting posts. avoid making quick quips. etc.

the site will grow and morph based on how users interact with each other.

Keep in mind the weather. It seems about the same to me, only the names have changed.

Well IMO that was all Wilhelm. He pitched a running fit over the content on DZ.com before selling to Namemedia. Because he thought if they didn't see a "Family Values" atmosphere, they wouldn't be interested. I told him his hardline tactics to change the forums would decrease hits and traffic. And I was right. Traffic has nosedived in the community forums to the point I only look at them maybe once or twice a week.

I don't know about traffic in the Community forums specifically, but on DZ in general, traffic is actually riding quite the upward trend. If you'd like, I can check the actual numbers and tell you for certain one way or the other. Actually, you got me all interested. I think I'll do it anyway...

...next week. Heading to the Red River Gorge in a couple hours, gotta wrap some things up.

Y'all be cool. Smile
