Sensationalist, but there's some truth to what he says. Home prices are far from bottom, and the clusterfuck in the real economy is only just getting started. 2009 is going to be a bad year.

I enjoyed this post (and the posts it links to) for some realistic interpretations of the state of the housing market:

After you explain why the President is trying to scare America into paying for irresponsibility, explain this.

SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday will pledge about $300 million in U.S. humanitarian aid for the war-torn Gaza Strip, plus about $600 million in assistance to the Palestinian Authority, a U.S. official said Sunday.

State Department spokesman Robert A. Wood told reporters traveling with Clinton Sunday that she would announce the donations at an international pledging conference at this Red Sea resort. The conference is seeking money for Gaza and the Palestinian economy.

Obama administration officials had indicated last week that the U.S. was preparing to pledge $900 million in assistance for Gaza, but Wood's description of the plan Sunday indicated that the only portion going directly to rebuilding Gaza was the $300 million.

Wood said that while all of the money is subject to approval by Congress, the intent is to provide about $200 million to help the Palestinian Authority shore up a budget shortfall and another $400 million to assist Palestinian institutional reforms and economic development. Wood said some of the $400 million might wind up aiding Gaza, but he said that would depend on the Palestinian Authority.

The President speaks of us being in a dire downward spiral, but we have money to give to away to aid other nations?

What's the reasoning?

Help me out here. Gaza, that's Palestine right? They just elected the Hamass as there political party right? That's who's controling the goverment there isn't it? Hamas... aren't they officaly declared a terorist organasation? By us and by the EU? Isn't it illegal to give money or support to them? Aren't they the ones that have been flinging rockets over the boarder at Isreal? Our allies right? Didn't they sign a peace treaty and then continue to shell them with missles till Isreal finle had enough and crossed the boarder to try and clear them out? Then they rolled over on there back and whined to all the nations about how mean the Isralies were? Didn't I see some thing about them flinging missles over the boarder once again? I mean after the Isralies let go of there throat and let them sign a cease fire? This is the group that in there mission statement the first goal they state is the compleat and utter destruction of the israley state? Kill all the jews and drive them into the sea and all that? I'm not real good about keeping up on events. Have I got all of this right or am I missunderstanding? I guess Hillery just hates the jews. So much for 50 years of middle east pollicy.

I always had trouble with this as well.

political leadership is labeled a "terrorist organization."
political organization kills civilians.
the dominant military force restricts movement and forces the rebellious to live on minimal land.

who should be backed?

the US backed Israel on one hand and the ANC on the other. I don't get it. it's hard to say the US acts on principle. I got to be missing something.

Re: [RiggerLee] Reasonable?
No Lee, you don't have it right. Yes, you have the official story of Isreal and the US government.

Gaza or Palestine is an occupied territory. It has been occupied by Isreal since it was invaded in 1948. The Gaza strip is completely controlled by Isreal. The people are not allowed to leave, trade, recieve medical supplies. The area is completely fenced in. It is a prison camp.
The US funds the Isreali military almost entirely, almost 7 million a day.
Hamas and other groups use home made rockets and some small arms in retaliation against all the latest in US military technology.

In the most recent attack on Gaza, it was the Isreali's who broke the cease-fire. 16 Isrealis died during the assault, at least 4 of which were killed by fellow soldiers. Over 1400 palestinians were killed.Close to 50% of the casualties were women and children, and thousands more wounded. Multiple hospitals, schools, and a UN wharehouse were bombed. Don't those numbers make you wonder?

Ask yourself, why does Hamas and other groups in palestine fight Isreal? Is it because they hate jews? Or is it because they are oppressed by Isreal to the point they have no other option, no other way to fight back?

Here are some links with more information. Do your own research, it's not as simple as it is presented in the U.S. media.

All I see is $900 million dollars that could be much better spent or better yet saved at home.

That's $900,000,000.

That's almost 26,000 $35,000 a year incomes.

That's over 176,000 tax bills for persons making $35,000 a year.

When are people going to start getting pissed?

Re: [RiggerLee] Reasonable?
You would be surprised if you knew how different this conflict is presented in US media compared to most other media in the world.

We (western countries, including the US) demanded a democratic election in Palestine. They did have that, and elected Hamas. Wouldn't we be working against democracy if we didn't accept their choice? We can't say "We are all for democracy as long as you choose exactly what we tell you to".

In reply to:

Most people outside of the US feel the American policy of the middle east is the biggest reason for why it is hard to make peace there.

In 2007, the United States increased its military aid to Israel by over 25% to an average of $3 billion per year for the following ten year period, while ending economic aid.

so the US taxpayer sends Israel $3 billion to blow things up, causing the US to promise another $0.9 billion to rebuild.

PLUS that conflict becomes the prime excuse for Arab hostility toward the US. causing the US to spend even more.

if you rework your numbers to include all these additional sums, it really would be eye-popping.

Yes, America has stepped on their crank

But also having three different religions

sure does not help matters eithers.

$3 billion looks like $3,000,000,000.

That's 85,714 American citizens/families that could be given $35,000 a year.

Or figuring that the tax liability before any deductions on $35,000 for 2008 is about $5,100 then 588,235 people wouldn't have their tax dollars wasted overseas.

Wouldn't THAT simulate the fucking economy?Unimpressed
