Hey-up!

Jus' wondering what wingsuiter's doing BASE thought about using a 36" vented zp pilot chute SMALL MESH vs. big mesh? I haven't had any problems yet , with me 36" or me 32" SMALL MESH. But people keep saying!

Seriously? Anybody having problems with small mesh? I'm jumping me 266 unvented , if anybody's interested?

I got me a 38" big mesh but haven't felt like using.

On the few I have all but one were 38" big mesh vented floating handle ZP. the one was a 42" off something short.

But...you mentioned a floating handle. Is that the sown over handle thing that Asylum/marty does? Got a picture?

Also did you ( calvin 19 ) use your BOC or a side pocket/pouch?

I use the leg pouch, (vampire 1) but after doing more ws BASE i am starting to think that I want a prodigy 2, and use the BOC.

I use ASylums awesome 38" floating internal handle. but reall any no handle pilot chute can be a floaing handle just throw a 2" section of handle pvc into the mesh.

O yeah I understand the reasons for wanting to use a prodiogy. but a phantom great and so much more forward speed and so much more! And is still an "easy" wingsuit BASE toy! And yeah I've used in BASE with boc.

The ace and blackjack are not all around good for beginner canopies for BASE!
They are great but have horrible recovery arcs!

Get off your arse's and get the Mojo on the computer and make it!

I do not have a photo of a pilot chute
with a floating handle, but have seen
one and can explain it easily.

Think of a skydive pilot chute without a
handle, you know those short pieces of
plastic pipe they use on student gear,
well a floating handle is just one of
those inside the PC.

I believe the benefit is so you have a
nub to grab but because there is nothing
on the outside of the PC it can't snag on
the bridle or weight down the apex of
the PC and cause a hesitation.


To Very Experienced Guys & Gals:

Please correct me if my rational for the
reason behind a floating handle is correct.

correct. and the benefit of the 'floating' (some internal handles are fixed in place) is that nothing on the inside of the PC can snag on a fixed piece of pipe, because it is 'floating'

Whole idea behind small mesh on PC's are weak.
The only purpose of having the PC is the extraction of the parachute. We need from PC to inflate ASAP after was thrown out from hand, in order to start pulling the pack job out from the container.
Heaving the small mesh - what that makes to PC inflation?! slowing it down.

Use the big hole mesh on every PC
Use the ZP top skin on every PC
Use the center vent on every PC
...and use the right size PC of course

I like the small mesh on PCs because it's stiffer and the holes are smaller. I feel it easier to be packed clean, and the small mesh can virtually not entangle if there is some small piece of shit inside it. Not saying that you shouldn't clean your PC of any branches or piece of grass, but you sometimes miss something, especially when it's dark. Moreover the small mesh being stiffer, the PC shape is less prone to deformation between the tape reinforcement (given it's properly bias-mounted)

Besides given the ratio of opened area in mesh VS volume to fill, I'm not that much worried about the inflation time. Anyone already observed variation of inflation time related to the type of mesh?

All in all, for me both kind of mesh will do just a fine job. Everything is in the color choice anyway

That statement is untrue and can only be based on people who have terrible canopy skills.

If you struggle with the recovery arc of an Ace or Blackjack, just turn a little higher or let the brakes up more gradually to avoid the small surge that sounds like it scares you so much.

The Ace and Blackjack are truly awesome canopies, they just tend to highlight it when the people under them have shitty canopy control. Don't be one of those people!

what is a "beginner" base canopy... if you are not a good canopy pilot, you have no business in base.

and to whoever brought up BASE gear for beginners:
I was going to say, recovery arc on a BASE canopy? how the hell are you flying to point that the recovery arc matters? if it comes down to the recovery arc of a 260 square foot .6/1 loaded BASE canopy mattering at all then the jumper in question has no purpose parachuting in the first place.

Which base canopy doesn't highlight shitty canopy control?

"Beginners" BASE gear is called a "Spectators Chair".

I feel what you all are saying. However, in my short time in the sport I've already seen some very bad canopy control on base jumps by quite a few jumpers (I spent last season at kjerag).

Is the dagger as good of a base canopy as any other because the jumper "should" have the skill to handle it?

edit: I have nothing to say about the blackjack, I was merely trying to debate the suggestion that there's no such thing as a less desirable canopy for a new jumper. And sorry for hijacking the thread

Hey James! Being one of the few people in the world who has a BASE related job, you should write a letter to your boy Obama requesting a $1 billion stimulus check for the base community. It could create domestic jobs that people previously had to travel all the way to Norway to get and wouldn't even be as wasteful as 99% of the rest of his plans!

Haha I agree. Man my ace does some weird shit when I snap a full toggle turn at 60 feet. Must be a poorly designed setup.

Didn't mean ta' use the word horrible , when talking bout the ace/blackjack recovery arc. I owned an Ace for a bit and loved it!

Just felt it to be a bit aggressive--at times.

Sometimes in out of the blue shite happens when ya gotta turn unexpectably or if you playin' in such I've noticed the the recovery to be more aggresive is all.

In that case I would suggest a Fox for a begginer.

a jumper who lives closer to that object than me got
upset and asked me to remove it so I did.

FYI - 2400 skydives, 40 BASE jumps, and it was my
first tree landing, oh at BD this year I landed 3 feet
from shore and had my first wet landing.
