Winds On A 'E' Jump
Winds on most jumps can be easily understood, but being a midwestern Flatlander I need some insight on situations faced when jumping a cliff in the 400' range

Re: [walsrt01] Winds On A 'E' Jump
there is a lot more info needed than just 400'.

is it in a valley? top or bottom of valley? LZ?

all cliffs should be treated case by case basis.

Re: [Calvin19] Winds On A 'E' Jump
Lets say for example Tombstone, we are making a roadtrip in March with Moab as a final destination.

Damn, I was hoping you had a 400' in Indiana... Unsure

There are some jumpers in indiana that should be able to help you. Do you talk to the experienced locals?

if you have a bad offheading, you will quite possible either hit the wall and get busted up, or you will sink into the rocky talus and get busted up.

think about that. the winds won't matter a bit if you haven't truly gotten a handle on that.

i apologize in advance if i'm merely pointing out the obvious, but as long as people keep getting hurt, i'm under the impression that it is not so obvious.

got a nasty 150' er but not crazy enough for that. Did however take the time to scope it out.

I have several drinkin budies from my area that have sub 150 base #'s, but as you can imagine their experience is a bit outdated with racers, direct bags, and suchWink

Re: [blitzkrieg] Winds On A 'E' Jump
I have a handle on the obvious danger in an off heading opening; however, I dont have a handle on the on all possable situations that could be encountered even if you do have an on heading opening. i.e. what are the no fly situations in your mind.

right on man.

i don't know you or your experience level, so please don't take any offense to my opinion that questions of the general & vague type (similar to what you originally posted) are questions of the inexperienced type.

i guess what i was originally trying to say (again not necessarily aimed at you) is that Moab (and E jumps in general) are not for beginners. people that ignore that fact have been getting dragged out or getting lucky.

no one can tell anyone not to jump, especially somewhere legal. but sometimes, i guess i wish they could.

Re: [blitzkrieg] Winds On A 'E' Jump
No Offense taken (my experience level is there along with the currency on jumping) but I still need to learn from others that have been busted up on an cliff if it was from a poor decision to jump on day with a particular wind and not from lack of skill, i.e. take a small chunk out of the understood risk

There is always wind drift. If it blows back up the cliff at you its not good.

I very much disagree with your bold statement.
If one jumps from the popular dam in Switzerland, ITW blabla bla..., it better be up or nothing. Everything else sucks big time.
Take care and think more. If it is blowing down the cliff, you are majorly screwed. If you are in a rotor, things get worse.
Take care,

I was thinking the same thing. If you need to get advice like that on a public, anonymous forum than maybe you should not be jumping an object like that by yourself. Maybe take someone along who you trust with some E experience. Tombstone is not going anywhere for a long longtime.

Otherwise. Wind doesn't matter on an E at all. it's all about how you flake your a and your c lines and also make sure your locking stow is no more than 1.34 inches long with a pin tension of .4lbs/inch.Wink

sorry... i'll shut-up now. don't listen to me i don't know anything...

haha seriously though. If in doubt don't jump. If your not sure then don't jump unless there is NO wind at all. Then you know for sure that whatever happens it wasn't the wind that fucked you up...

Stick a flag in the landing area and spit over the edge. If the spit falls straight down than you should be good.

But really, don't listen to me I don't know anything...

Moab can be weird with all the canyons. The wind does some strange things blowing all around in there.

" Any serious input on the matter" why yes, for you, if its windy at all, don't jump, that is the best advice so far. And -just maybe- don't jump even if there is no wind.

Re the comment about wind up the cliff being bad, this is site dependent, but I totally agree with TW, most of the time, on many cliffs this is fine and even a good thing. But all should beware of blanket statements, Calvin is right, every cliff is unique, with unique circumstances and conditions.

cheers!
